As a 157 bed medical, surgical, and psychiatric facility, the Kansas City VA provides comprehensive health care through primary care and tertiary care in subspecialty medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation. This position is being filled under the Pathways Recent Graduate Program. The program is designed to supplement formal education programs through hands on experience. Opportunities are provided to Recent Graduates to apply knowledge gained through coursework. Through this program, VA provides in-hospital experiences for students who are receiving or who have just received a qualifying educational degree.This is a 24-month program. The incumbent will work for the Chief Accountant of the Fiscal Department at the Kansas City VA Medical Center. This is a developmental position designed to prepare candidates for work in the Accounting field. Candidates must be knowledgeable of professional concepts and methodologies as well as be knowledgeable in functional program characteristics and requirements.
Major duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Records transactions in accounts utilizing a computerized system
  • Provides assistance to other accountants, accounting interns, and accounting technicians in the resolution of complex problems, the interpretation of written guidelines and similar technical matters
  • Initiates, leads, and/or participates in special studies or reviews of accounting operations and prepares reports, automated systems changes and/or standard operating procedures based on study results
  • Reviews facility and agency regulations, procedures and policy guidance, audit findings, customer complaints, and managerial directives dealing with day-to-day operations to identify new requirements, sources of problems, interfaces with other appropriations/ accounting systems and functions susceptible to more economical, efficient and effective operations
  • Gathers and analyzes data from a variety of sources
  • Coordinates with specialists in Fiscal or affected departments/customers and service activities to develop corrective approaches to problem situations
