The South Texas Veterans Health Care System (STVHCS) is comprised of two inpatient campuses: the Audie L. Murphy Memorial VA Hospital in San Antonio and the Kerrville VA Hospital in Kerrville, Texas. The STVHCS serves one of the largest primary service areas in the nation, with 63 counties, and is part of the VA Heart of Texas Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN 17), with offices located in Arlington, Texas. Providing a service to Veterans with a working staff of more than 3,100 employees, South Texas provides health care services for 93,000 Veterans. The STVHCS is a facility providing primary, secondary and tertiary health care in medicine, surgery, psychiatry, and rehabilitation medicine. It also supports a 90 bed Extended Care Therapy Center, a 30-bed Spinal Cord Injury Center, an eight-bed Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, and a Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center. Affiliated with the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, the system has an active ambulatory care program with numerous satellite outpatient clinics.VA professionals feel good about their careers and their ability to balance work and home life.

This position may be filled at the GS9 grade level.

 

One position will be filled from this announcement. This position will be located at the Audie L. Murphy VA Hospital http://www.southtexas.va.gov/.

 

Duties

This position is located in San Antonio, Texas at the Substance Abuse Treatment Program (SATP).  The incumbent will perform a variety of therapeutic and program related activities with clinical supervision from the Director of the SATP or his/her designee.  You will be a member of a multidisciplinary treatment team in delivering health care to veterans and their families requesting treatment for chemical dependency.  Receives patients and collects demographic and psychosocial information as part of the intake of individuals into the SATP.  Prepares written assessments based on knowledge of each patient's background and medical history for use by members of the multidisciplinary treatment team or the therapist's use in developing the appropriate recovery plans.  Serves as a member of multidisciplinary treatment team and works with other professionals to formulate treatment and follow-up plans for each patient assigned.  Conducts group, family and individual therapeutic counseling sessions; observes patient behaviors and reaction patterns for use by higher level professionals or the treatment team in reviewing and modifying recovery and/or follow-up plans.  Contributes to team decisions concerning necessary controls and restrictions required for the therapeutic progress of both individual patients and the community in general, and recommends degrees of supervision required, including privileges, therapeutic leaves of absence, readiness for a job placement, readiness for special education programs and readiness for discharge.    Arranges referral of patients to other federal agencies, state and other public and private organizations and gives guidance to patients relative to benefits and services provided within the VA and the local community, along with eligibility requirements. Develops and maintains appropriate communications, rapport and positive working relationships with a variety of institutions, organizations and service providers.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Nights and weekends may be required.  (Subject to change based on program needs)
