    VA San Diego Healthcare System (VASDHS) currently has two vacancies, one Full Time and one Part-Time (20 hrs/wk) for Addiction Therapist position located in the Alcohol/Drug Treatment Program (ADTP) in the Mental Health Care Line (MHCL) of the VASDHS La Jolla. The incumbent must be certified in their area of mental health specialty or have completed advanced schooling in mental health. The incumbent's major involvements are as individual and group therapist, group leader, instructor (patient, family, community, and in-service education) and community service/outreach worker. The incumbent is assigned a tour of duty compatible with the needs of the program and may include day, evenings, and weekends. The incumbent may be assigned to either residential or outpatient ADTP, which could mean job responsibilities in the main facility in La Jolla (inpatient or outpatient), or in any the Community-Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) - Mission Valley, Chula Vista, Oceanside, and/or Escondido (outpatient only in CBOCs).

    Specific duties for this position include but are not limited to:

    -Provides direct, individual, and group counseling services to patients and their families/loved ones. Observes patient behaviors and reaction patterns for use by higher-level professionals or the multidisciplinary treatment team in reviewing and modifying treatment and/or follow-up plans.

    -Receives patients and participates in the admission/screening process by interviewing patients and their families, and completing intake assessments. Provides psychological and social assessments as part of the intake of individuals into the ADTP.

    -Conducts educational classes for patient population, utilizing a variety of techniques, formats and media, including lecture, discussion, experiential, and audio/video presentations.

    -Provides crisis intervention, stabilization, and follow-up as needed. Handles other emergency situations independently without specific instructions.

    -May administer screening tools specific to program as appropriate to professional competencies, observing and recording patient reactions and recommending appropriate treatment modalities.

    -Maintains appropriate documentation of all clinical contacts. Responds in a timely manner to all requests for data/reports/monitors needed to support the MHCL.

    -Prepares written assessments based on knowledge of each patient's background and medical history for use by members of the multidisciplinary treatment team or the therapist's use in developing the appropriate treatment process.

    -Attends in-service/educational programs, and maintains current knowledge of the field. Maintains active/unrestricted license or active certification in area of mental health specialty.

    -Monitors specimen collections of veterans involved in the ADTP.

    -Orders ADTP toxicology in CPRS.

    -Provides in-service/educational programs for clinical staff of the ADTP, Psychiatry Department, and other professional and paraprofessional persons within the VASDHS, and contract facilities that specialize in treating the ADTP patient population.

    -Acts as a liaison/resource person to public and private agencies and community resources to assure continuity of patient care and appropriate referrals for the patient and his/her family. Mobilizes community service structures to enhance the recovery process.

    -Arranges referral of patients to other Federal agencies, State and other public as well as private organizations and gives advice and guidance to patients relative to benefits and services provided within the VA and the local community, along with eligibility requirements.

    -Functions as treatment coordinator for patients, developing treatment plans and follow-up plans for each assigned patient, with input from the treatment team.

    -Participates in team treatment planning sessions, communicating relevant information concerning patient progress.

    -Contributes to team decisions concerning necessary controls and restrictions required for the therapeutic progress of both individual patients and the community in general. Recommends degrees of supervision required, including need for consultation with other professionals and programs, readiness/appropriateness for specialized treatment, and readiness for discharge.

    Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, Full-time 40 hrs/week ; Part-time (20 hrs/week). Weekends and Evenings schedules to accommodate patients need. The work schedule for these positions will be discussed in detail during the interview process.
