    Applicants that select the Kansas City location on this announcement can be considered for any of the following areas: BOS, GEC, Mental Health, Primary Care, Radiology, and Transition (Department descriptions below). Those who apply to a Community-Based Outpatient Clinic will only be considered for positions under BOS and GEC.

    Due to the nature and requirements of this position, previous experience working in a clinical setting is extremely necessary.

    BOS: Works under the supervision of Business Operations Service (BOS) as support for various clinics. Provides the healthcare needs for an assigned panel of patients. Works collaboratively to provide a robust interdisciplinary approach to care. Incumbent can be assigned to a variety of clinics within the Main KCVAMC Campus or to one of the CBOCs.
    GEC: Geriatric and Extended Care Service Line (GEC) AMSA's are supervised by the Section Department Chief. Incumbent will be the primary point of contact for their assigned CBOC: Honor Annex (Kansas City), Excelsior Springs, Belton and Paola.
    MENTAL HEALTH: AMSA's for the Mental Health Service are under the supervision of the Service Chief of Mental Health. Requires knowledge of the facility regulations, policies, and procedures to confirm patient appointments. As needed, the AMSA should be able to provide coverage in various clinics within the Mental Health service line: Substance Abuse Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program/Substance Treatment Outpatient Program (SARRTP/STOP), Compensated Work Therapy (CWT), and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Outpatient Clinic (PCT).
    PRIMARY CARE: AMSA for the Primary Care Telehealth Program is under the supervision of the Facility Telehealth Coordinator. Performs clerical duties such as answering telephones, schedule/cancel/reschedule/no-show patient and provider side Telehealth appointments and provide service utilization review to make necessary schedule adjustments.
    RADIOLOGY: AMSA's in the Radiology Service Line are under the supervision of the Radiology Health System Specialist. Requires practical knowledge of medical terminology and procedures common to each modality, department procedures. Analytical ability, judgment discretion, and dedication to customer service are required daily to carry out the functions of this position.
    TRANSITION: AMSA's located within the Transition Department are supervised by the Transition Department Supervisor/Social Work Executive. Transition Team provides interdisciplinary inpatient discharge planning, outpatient medical case management, palliative care and spiritual support services to Veterans.

    Major AMSA Duties include but are not limited to:

    • Serves as the front line of contact with patients. Sets the tone for the quality of healthcare and services at the VA. Incumbent must utilize a high degree of tact and diplomacy as well as a caring, compassionate and sensitive manner.
    • Interviews patients to obtain information needed to determine eligibility and obtain pre-approval from the insurance company to process billings.
    • Receives and screens telephone calls in a courteous and timely manner using privacy rules and established clinic processes. Forwards calls to team members as needed and/or take messages as needed.
    • Processes first party requests for medical records and written (faxed) requests for medical information from hospitals and/or doctors. Contacts professional staff to obtain information necessary to respond to requests when not available in established records.
    • Identifies incomplete information daily and communicates finds to providers to facilitate accurate workload credit and revenue collection.
    • Supports patient safety standards and correctly identifies all patients through use of two forms of identification, Veterans Identification Card (VIC) and social security card.
    • Participates in the daily huddles and weekly meetings with each assigned team for patient care planning and management.
    • Performs the function of "Patient Health Coach" by working with patients prior to a face-to-face visit, post visit follow-up, and between visits. Activities can include setting a visit agenda, checking on medication use, ensuring needed testing is conducted, self-management skill building, and overall enhancing the patient experience with the visit.
    • Manages position responsibilities by setting priorities and deadlines, adjusting the flow and sequencing of work to meet team and patient needs with little supervision.
    • Provides administrative support to Physicians, Physician's Assistants, Nurses, Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners, Dietitians, Social Workers and other administrative and professional staff.
