    The St. Louis VAMC is a full-service health care facility providing inpatient and ambulatory care in medicine, surgery, psychiatry, neurology, and rehabilitation, as well as over 65 subspecialty areas. It is a two-division facility that serves veterans and their families in east central Missouri and southwestern Illinois.

    The John Cochran Division has all of the medical center's operative surgical capabilities, the ambulatory care unit, and a six-story Clinical Addition that includes surgical facilities, intensive care units, outpatient psychiatry clinics, and expanded laboratory.

    The Jefferson Barracks Division provides psychiatric treatment, regional spinal cord injury treatment, a nursing home care unit, geriatric health care, rehabilitation services, and a rehabilitation domiciliary program for homeless veterans.

    Responsibilities

    The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) functions as the professional leader of an interdisciplinary health care team and possesses the administrative leadership necessary to promote interdisciplinary cooperation. In collaboration with the Nurse Manager (NM), the ANM functions as a supervisor and assumes accountability for the operational functions of GI Dept. The ANM is responsible for creating a positive work environment which enhances care delivery and professional development of clinically competent staff. The ANM responsibilities include demonstration of the knowledge and skills necessary to facility and maintain care appropriate for the patients admitted to GI Dept. The incumbent should be familiar with the care of GI patients, protocols, and daily operations and supervises care in accordance with established standards and hospital policies and procedures, as well as, accepts responsibility and maintains accountability for own actions and for professional and personal growth. The ANM demonstrates the ability to assume leadership in a patient centered program, and possesses the ability to establish effective communication with patients, families, visitors, and other members of the interdisciplinary team. The ANM will function in the clinical role at least fifty percent (50%) of the time which may include but is not limited to relieving staff for meetings, breaks and call-in supplementation. Clinical role will also include education and mentoring in the patient care areas as well as taking assignments and helping with the general demands on the unit.

    Duties will include but not limited to:

    Demonstrates effective leadership in assigned area and understands processes, procedures, standards, methods, and technologies related to assignment; collaborates and works well with others.

    Serves as an assistant with line authority to the nurse manager in providing leadership and direction to nursing staff

    Acts as the Nurse Manager during times of Nurse Manager absence, by directly supervising staff who provide care which compensates for or assists in meeting the health-related self-care demands, and/or enhancing or developing self-care

    In collaboration with the nurse manager is responsible for the administration, management, supervision and evaluation of both nursing care and nursing personnel on the unit

    Communicates clearly, orally and in writing, and maintains staff confidentiality

    Providing unit coverage when needed (charge nurse, staff relief or taking an assignment); administers nursing care, medications and procedures per established policies and guidelines

    Assisting the Nurse Manager in formulating and managing staff scheduling and accurately entering data into Acustaf

    Utilizes appropriate position descriptions / functional statements, Performance Standards, and Qualification Standards to provide input for staff performance evaluations to Nurse Manager on Title 38 and Title 5 (GS) employees.

    Assisting the nurse manager in compiling and submitting of required reports in a timely manner including: performance appraisals, proficiencies, performance improvement reports, certified time, and other workload and patient care data requested.

    Assures that staff documentation is accurate indicating patient findings, assessments, and care provided in the medical record focusing on established performance standards.

    Demonstrates sound judgment in problem/conflict resolution skills and in daily overall unit operations

    Works in partnership with the union and adheres to EEO principles

    Assists nurse manager in planning and conducting regularly scheduled unit staff meetings; encourages open communication and verbalization of options when identifying and resolving problems, facilitates resolutions through appropriate channels.

    Participating on unit, service and medical center committees and task forces to improve nursing practice and patient care; disseminating applicable information to the GI Dept staff.

    Active participation at the unit/program/facility level quality improvement processes and initiatives

    In collaboration with the nurse manager, initiating new unit specific performance improvement activities

    Completes policy / procedure development and / or review in a timely manner under the direction of the nurse manager

    Identifies educational needs of the staff and ensures that these needs are addressed. Assures that all staff members complete mandatory annual reviews and assists NM/Nurse Educator in certifying staff competencies

    In collaboration with the nurse manager, implements a unit-based orientation and preceptor program

    Maintains proficiency in practice on their assigned unit and remains current with required certification for their unit, i.e., basic life support (BLS), advanced cardiac life support (ACLS).
