    About the Memphis VA Medical Center: The VAMC in Memphis, Tennessee consists of one main campus located at 1030 Jefferson Avenue, which includes a sixty-bed Spinal Cord Injury Unit, and ten community based outpatient clinics (CBOC). It is a tertiary care facility classified as a Clinical Referral Level 1 Facility and one of the most complex medical centers in the VA system. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology, as well as extensive education and research programs. Comprehensive primary, secondary, and tertiary health care is provided in areas of medicine, general cardiovascular and neurological surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, spinal cord injury, neurology, oncology, dentistry, and geriatrics. Specialized outpatient services are provided through general, specialty, and subspecialty outpatient clinics including a women's health center. Services are available to more than 206,000 Veterans living in a fifty-three county tristate area (Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi).

    Responsibilities


    The Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist, will be assigned to Engineering Service.
    · Provides operational support of complex digital medical equipment through installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and problem resolution activities with clinical users, manufacturers, and OIT staff.
    · Serves as technical consultant and advisor to clinical staff in matters concerning instrumentation used in the care and treatment of patients.
    · Identifies equipment failures/problems that are a result of operator error rather than equipment malfunction; provides instruction to equipment operators on the proper use of equipment to avoid recurrences; safeguards personally identifiable information (PII) for medical devices he/she is responsible for, which could be physical and/or electronic methods.
    · Works closely with professional, engineering and medical personnel; communicates orally and in writing and must exercise tact and diplomacy with all medical, as well as with administrative and engineering, professionals to determine overall objectives desired, while visualizing, suggesting and working out solutions to problems involving special care patients; utilizes judgment, with the assistance of supervisor as needed, to determine the best method of repair and researches the most efficient and cost effective vendor if it is determined that vendor service is either cost or time-efficient; schedules, monitors, and reviews outside vendor services to ensure appropriate quality workmanship in a timely fashion.
    · Distinguishes between appropriate and inappropriate techniques and methods employed by Field Service engineers/ technicians; notifies supervisor for assistance with conflicts that may arise; responsible for the installation, calibration and performance of entire medical systems, consisting of several subsystems, the failure of which would directly cause failure of the medical mission; recognizes hazardous conditions and procedures in the Medical Center and reports these problems to the Chief Biomedical Engineer.
    · Assists with technology assessments to determine if design, applicability, function, efficacy, and cost effectiveness is appropriate for the Medical Center for various medical devices.
    · Maintains a competence level in the state of the art technology through contacts with factory, private, and in-house training, currents texts, electronic and medical publications, seminars etc.; performs other related duties as assigned that may normally be assigned to other units or sections within engineering service.
