    The Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center, Wichita, KS is seeking a full time Chief of Psychiatry to work in the Behavioral Health Department.

    Bargaining Unit:  Not-Covered

    FLSA Status:  Exempt

    Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 0800-1630

    Salary Range: $115,000- $292,000/annum Pay Table 2 Tier 2

    Responsibilities

    Chief of Psychiatry

    The Chief of Psychiatry is responsible for the overall operation of the Psychiatry Service Line at the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center (RJDVA).  He/she will oversee clinical psychiatry operations, including budget and fiscal management, human resources management, strategic planning and program development.  The Chief of Psychiatry assures that the clinical and administrative functions are integrated, to provide optimum utilization of available resources.  He/she ensures the quality and timeliness of the service provided, customer satisfaction, as well as compliance with standards of accrediting bodies such as the Joint Commission.  The Chief of Psychiatry will serve as site coordinator for the Psychiatry Residency affiliated with local Universities.

    Chief, Psychiatry duties include but are not limited to the following:

    Administrative duties:

    • Assume the responsibility, in collaboration with the AO and with the direction of the ACOS for BH, for the overall management of the RJDVA Psychiatry Service Line.  This includes the organization of the administrative day-to-day activities of the Psychiatry Service Line.
    • Coordinate and integrate the interdepartmental functioning of the RJDVA Psychiatry Service Line and Behavioral Health.  This includes chairing relevant meetings.
    • Complete performance appraisals, proficiency reports, and professional practice evaluations on staff psychiatrists and advanced practice nurse practitioners assigned to the Psychiatry Service Line.  Will ensure that all MD's are privileged and registered with the National Clozapine Prescribing Center as well as maintaining certification regarding suboxone.
    • Attend Credentialing and Privileging Committee, Medical Staff Meetings, Medical Professional Standards Board, and Clinical Practice Council, participate on Peer Reviews for all prescribing cases involving Psychiatry Service, and lead a monthly provider meeting for all the prescribing disciplines.
    • Be involved in all Human Resource matters involving Psychiatrists and Nurse Practitioners within the service.
    • Ensure staff meet productivity, efficiency, and quality measures.

    Clinical duties:

    • Interpret lab tests and other specialty imaging to establish diagnosis and assist in management of psychiatric conditions.
    • Serve as psychiatric attending physician to medical students, psychiatric residents and others approved to rotate with RJDVA Psychiatry and Behavioral Health and participate in related educational activities as appropriate.  Maintain and enhance relationship with local medical schools.
    • Will have at minimum 25% designated clinical time.

    Quality of Care:

    •  The provider will keep abreast of the recent advances in respective specialty techniques and technological innovations as they become available.  The provider will apply these techniques and innovations within the framework of the Veterans Administration's guidelines, directives, goals and mission.
    • Participate in Performance Improvement/QM programs in his/her practice.

    Communication:

    • Represent the organization, internally and externally, as a manager that reflects positively on the Health Care System and the Department of Veterans Affairs.
    • Advise and coordinate activities, resolving controversial issues related to program operations and influencing top management decisions on educational program activities.  Maintain amicable and open relations, to respond to specific inquiries and to foster an atmosphere of cooperation and open communication with entities having an interest in the activities of the VA.  Require skill in negotiating and persuasion and the ability to communicate diplomatically.
