The Crescenz VA Medical Center - Philadelphia is a complex 1b tertiary care facility consisting of acute inpatient beds and long term care beds.  The organization has robust education and research programs and offers treatment for 40 different American Medical Associations recognized medical specialties and sub-specialties including Medicine and Surgery, Intensive Care, General Psychiatry, Substance Abuse Treatment, Long Term Care (Nursing Home Care Units) and Residential Rehabilitation Inpatient Program. The medical center is a teaching facility and is affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and over 50 other colleges and universities.  The organization consists of the main Medical Center, three Community Based Outpatient Clinics, one clinical and administrative annex, a Community Living Center and a 40 bed Mental Health Residential Rehabilitation Program.

The incumbent acts as a representative of the Pharmacy Service having advanced knowledge and proficiency in pharmacy practice and operations, including demonstrated competency in the areas of investigational drugs and research and anticoagulation management. This position will have primary oversight and management of the Investigational Drugs and Research Program for the Pharmacy Service, as well as serve as a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist, functioning at the highest level of clinical practice as an advanced practice provider with a scope of practice.

Major Duties of the position:

1) Program Management:
- Acts as a liaison between Pharmacy Service and the Research Department, regularly interfacing with study coordinators and investigators.
- Represents Pharmacy Service on the Investigational Review Board (IRB) Committee and Research & Development (R&D) Committee.
- Reviews investigational drug research protocols prior to investigator submission to the IRB Committee to ensure the pharmacy components.
- Prepares reports for the R&D Committee.
- Provides written and/or verbal information to the Pharmacy and Therapeutics &T) Committee regarding investigational drug or drug-related research protocols that are being reviewed by the IRB Committee.

2) Clinical:
- Responsible for monitoring serum drug levels and laboratory tests, or other appropriate drug-related clinical parameters.
- Monitors and documents adverse drug events (ADEs) reported for subjects participating in investigational drug studies or other drug-related research.
- Serves as a source of drug information for healthcare professionals on matter involving the use of investigational drugs.

3) Education and Research:
- Responsible for keeping abreast of changes within Pharmacy Service (e.g., formulary additions and deletions, interdepartmental memoranda, policies and procedures) and maintaining a general knowledge of VA, DEA and The Joint Commission (TJC) regulations.
- Skilled at using both written and verbal communication techniques in teaching others, including the ability to adjust communication based on age and developmental considerations.
- Provides education and information to staff regarding investigational drugs, such as special precautions regarding their preparation and/or use and appropriate clinical monitoring.

Work Schedule: 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday - Friday (may include occasional weekends and holidays and other tours based upon Service needs).
