Duties

The Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Mental Health uses expertise in psychiatric disorder symptom management and psychopharmacology to optimize patient care.  Serves as a licensed independent provider of psychiatric pharmacy with prescribing privileges as outlined in the individual's Scope of Practice for Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Mental Health (CPS-MH).  The primary responsibility of the CPS-MH is provision of evidence-based pharmaceutical care services throught both direct and indirect interaction with patients and providers.  This pharmacist practitioner is responsible for providing clinical services to patients with Mental Health disorders in collaboration with inpatient mental health services, outpatient mental health services (Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program), primary care-mental health integration and may include other programs provided by the Mental Health Care Line (i.e. PRRC Day Treatment Center, Addictive Disorders Treatment Program, PTSD Clinical Team and Homeless Community Based Outreach Clinics).  S/He promotes and manages drug therapy based on current clinical knowledge that is consistent with policies established at the national, VISN, and local levels.  The Clinical Pharmacy Specialist functions as part of the Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program (BHIP) which provides a panel of assigned Veterans to provide continuous access to ongoing recovery-oriented, evidence based, mental health care for Veterans already receiving MH care and Veterans new to the system- consistent with the Handbook on Uniform Mental Health Services in VA Medical Centers and Clinics.  Clinical Pharmacy Specialist is an employee of the medical center's Pharmacy Service, to ensure s/he receives all professional guidance, policy and communications, along with department missions and goals, especially regarding the VA National Formulary, VISN and local medical center Pharmacy and Therapeutic Committee objectives for formulary management activities and patient safety.

Individual must be a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist with a current Scope of Practice and an understanding of goals, objectives, and performance measures associated with the development, maintenance, and improvement of Mental Health clinical pharmacy program.  Doctor of Pharmacy degree and PGY2 Pharmacy Residency in mental health, Board Certification in Psychiatry (BCPP) or equivalent experience are required.  The Mental Health Clinical Pharmacist is an active member of the mental health team and responsible for inpatient and outpatient care, patient teaching, quality assessment, staff education and consultation. Incumbent is responsible for the daily professional and administrative operations of the Mental Health Pharmacy Program.

Work Schedule: Primary tour Monday-Friday, 08:00am-4:30pm, weekends, holidays and hours outside the designated tour may be required.
