The VAMC in Memphis, TN consists of one main campus located at 1030 Jefferson Avenue, which includes a 60-bed Spinal Cord Injury Unit, and nine community based outpatient clinics (CBOC). It is a tertiary care facility classified as a Clinical Referral Level I Facility and one of the most complex medical centers in the VA system.It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology, as well as extensive education and research programs. Comprehensive primary, secondary, and tertiary health care is provided in areas of medicine, general cardiovascular and neurological surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, spinal cord injury, neurology, oncology, dentistry, and geriatrics. Specialized outpatient services are provided through general, specialty, and subspecialty outpatient clinics including a women's health center.Services are available to more than 206,000 Veterans living in a 53-county tri-state area (Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi).

The VAMC in Memphis is part of the VA MidSouth Healthcare Network, VISN 9, which includes facilities in Lexington and Louisville, KY; Huntington,WV; and Nashville and Mountain Home, TN.

Duties

The following positions may be filled by this announcement:

  • Clinical Psychologist (Spinal Cord Injury) (1 position)
  • Staff Psychologist (1 position)
  • Clinical Psychologist (Polytrauma/PCT Psychologist)  (1 position)
  • Clinical Psychologist (Neuropsychology) (1 position)
  • Clinical Psychologist (Primary Care Mental Health Integration) (7 position)

The Clinical Psychologist position is located within the Mental Health Service at the Memphis VA Medical Center.

  • Clinical Psychologist (Spinal Cord Injury) is assigned to the Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) treatment team and
    participate in rounds, treatment team meetings, discharge planning meetings, and family conferences. Incumbent provides therapeutic services for individuals with spinal cord injuries and their loved ones in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Facilitates both inpatient and outpatient groups to address needs of patients with spinal cord injuries.
  • Staff Psychologist provides recovery oriented education to patients, family members, and significant others; delivers mental health care via Telemental Health technology; Completes Compensation and Pension (C&P) Examinations as part of the regular duties; provides comprehensive, evidence- based rehabilitative, vocational and life adjustment interventions, including individual, family and group psychotherapy.
  • Clinical Psychologist (Polytrauma/PTSD Clinical Team) is assigned to the VA Medical Center at Memphis as a member of the Polytrauma Clinic Interdisciplinary Team in Transition Care Team and the PTSD Clinical Team (PCT) in Mental Health Service. 
  • Clinical Psychologist (Neuropsychology) is assigned to the Neuropsychology Program. You will be responsible for delivery of specialized and complex assessment services for the diagnosis of functional and organic disorders as well as delineation of rehabilitative, vocational and life adjustment prospects of patients.
  • Clinical Psychologist (Primary Care Mental Health Integration) is assigned to the VA Medical Center at Memphis in Primary Care- Mental Health Integration (PCMHI) for the Blue Clinic- Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT). PCMHI is a blended model consisting of co-located collaborative face-to-face care in PACT and telephone care management through the VISN 9 Behavioral Health Lab (BHL).

In addition to providing direct patient care, the psychologists will have limited administrative duties, clinical trainee supervision, and teaching responsibilities. Some of the major duties of these positions are:

  • Provides a full range of psychological assessment services and diagnoses mental disorders, particularly for complex or unusually difficult patients.
  • Provides recovery oriented education to patients, family members, and significant others.
    Provides comprehensive, evidence- based rehabilitative, vocational and life adjustment interventions, including individual, family and group psychotherapy.
  • Provides consultation to professional staff within VA Medical Center at Memphis and to community providers, concerning clinical assessment findings and appropriate treatment plans.
  • Provision of mental health treatment through Telehealth technology is considered a routine means of care delivery.  Training modules will be completed within the first 60 days on duty.  The required skills assessment will be completed at the first opportunity following completion of the training modules, as coordinated with the facility Telehealth Lead.  All providers will deliver mental health care via Telemental Health technology as part of their regular duties.
  • The Psychologist will intermittently complete Compensation and Pension (C&P) Examinations as part of their regular duties, and are required to complete training modules to obtain VBA Examiner certification.
  • The Psychologist will support same-day access to mental health services for Veterans as deemed necessary by the service, in person and by telephone. 

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30pm; however, working hours may be modified to support mental health clinics that extend prior to or after normal working hours.
