    Responsibilities

    The technologist specializes in two areas: Cardiovascular Tomography-Interventional Technology (CV) and Computed Tomography (CT). Cardiovascular-interventional technologists use specialized equipment to perform diagnostic angiographic procedures and complex vascular and nonvascular interventional and therapeutic procedures. This speciality requires additional knowledge of vascular systems and major vessel anatomy. the technologist must be knowledgeable in the specialized equipment employed for digital subtraction systems and interventional procedures. The technologist administers contrast media under the supervision of the staff radiologist and confers with the radiologist to establish requirements with reference to contrast agents, vital signs, medications, and physiologic monitoring to perform procedures. CV technologists must be knowlegeable in multiple catheters, wires, PTA balloons and sheaths. Additionally, picture archiving and communciations systems (PACS) for documenting procedures and radiation dose reporting.

    The computerized tomography (CT) speciality modality requires specific knowledge of cross sectional human anatomy, and its application in spiral, and/or, multi-slice computer tomography, inclusive of 3-D reconstruction scans, including drainages, biopsies, and peripheral vascular examinations. Additionally reconstruct all CT scans for 3D Imaging, Volume Rendering, Sagital Corral, Axial and Maximum Intense Projection (MIP) Imagery. The technologist requires specific knowledge and training in the location, appearance, and function of the various major and minor systems susceptible to radiological illumination; to interpret the examination request accurately; to understand the functioning and inter-relationship of the various organs; to use the methods and techniques which will identify organs appearing on the digital display monitor and Picture Achieving System (PACS), and the various stages of the examination to judge the acceptability of the image and/or scan for diagnostic use and to emphasize the aspects of particular interest to the physician.

    Some of the duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    • Schedules exams in a manner so as to optimize scanner times while maintaining flexibility for emergency cases. This requires the ability to prioritize scheduled patients as well as the ability to accommodate the emergency patient who may need immediate emergency surgery, etc.
    • Confers with radiologists to determine requirement of non-standard exams. Determines technical factors, positioning, number and thickness of scans to produce and satisfy requirements of CT scanning. Schedules patients for examinations. and advises radiologists or referring physicians of examination results. Additionally, the technologist notifies the physician of scans requiring their immediate attention.
    • Implements radiation safety practices that exceed or meet national standards. Exercisers the ALARA (As Low AS Reasonably Achievable) principle of radiation reduction with every patient and every exam.
    • Performs reconstructions of CT and angiographic studies when requested or when part of a standard procedure.
    • Responsible to explain exams to competent patients so that patients understand what is to be done as well as what hazards, if any, are possible.
    • Responsible for stocking and inventory of all CT and angiography supplies and related materials.
    • Performs irregular hour emergency scans on standby, 24hours per day and call coverage. Requires the technologist be available within 30 minutes from receipt of call so that proper and effective emergency care can be given to the patient.
    • Other duties as assigned.
    Work Schedule: Monday - Friday: 7-3:30 p.m. 7:30-4:00 p.m. 8-4:30 p.m and 9-5:30 p.m. Shifts rotate, call rotates and shifts may be changed as department need arises.
