    Responsibilities

    This position is located in Radiology Service at the VA Salt Lake City Medical Center. Incumbents at this level are fully functional as a Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist/Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and are able to carry out their assigned tasks independently. At this level may have varying assignments including specialized and complex MRI radiographic procedures. Regardless of the nature of the specific assignment, the work must be of sufficient scope and complexity to meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform at this level independently.

    The position is that of a Registered Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist and board certified ARRT MRI technologist with skill in MRI scanning, such as echo spin gradients, echo planar imaging, angio 3D gradient imaging and all gated and triggered cardiac imaging. The position also may have rotating schedules through a variety of shifts to include call. The incumbent will also participate in a call pool during the week to include weekends. Call is 7 days at a time.

    The incumbent's duties include, but are not limited to:

    • The incumbent is responsible for setting up and positioning patients, provides immobilization devices, selects proper technical factors on an individual patient basis and operates the equipment. New equipment will be evaluated and new methods will be compared with existing methods. Interaction with physicians, scientists, physicists, computer programmers and manufacturer's technical design engineers will be a normal occurrence of the daily duties of the operator, along with patient interactions.
    • The incumbent stocks his/her work area with needles, syringes, gauze, local anesthetics and a variety of catheters, guide wires and dilators, used in invasive procedures. The incumbent maintains and stocks all supplies used in his/her work area.
    • The incumbent interacts with patients, explains exam procedures, positions patients within the scanner (MRI), monitors patients during all phases of the examination, and records all patient exam information for permanent record.
    • When operating the MRI, the incumbent coordinates with Radiologist and Physicist to determine the most ideal parameters to pulse the magnet for each individualized patient examination.
    • Programs technical factors by interrogating computer console and responding with inputs that will result in the required parameters as determined by the Radiologist and Physicist.
    • Monitor the examination by checking computations, performances and results of the selected parameters, to obtain the best diagnostic computer data and images.
    • Performs technical operation and general maintenance of the computer, disk drives, console, imaging devices, etc. The incumbent assists manufacturer representative and biomedical engineers in the calibration and trouble shooting of malfunctions in the equipment used (MRI), notifies the Chief Technologist of any failure or required service.
    • The incumbent maintains archives of recording media and film files. Coordinates daily schedule and consults with hospital physicians, clinical and administrative personnel pertaining to the next day and future day's availability for patient examinations. Maintains inventory of lab, medical, and computer supplies and initiates procedures to replenish stock and to receive stock supplies.
    • When operating the MRI, the incumbent performs or monitors safety checks on patients, employees and visitors to comply with FDA safety standards regarding ferrous objects and cardiac pacemakers prior to those persons entering the environment of the five (5) Gauss magnetic field. Assists in preparation of manuals, and assists in devising modifying procedures as necessary.
    • He/she assists in training general diagnostic Radiologic technologists.
    • Other duties as assigned

    Work Schedule: Full-time 40 hours a week Monday through Friday,tour of duties could be 7:00am - 3:30pm or 8:00am - 4:30pm or 10:00am - 6:30pm. Rotational shifts and On-call are required. Incumbent needs to be within 40 to 45 minutes from the hospital when on-call. Schedule may also include holidays, weekends, and on-call. Management reserves the right to determine and/or change the tour of duty.
