VA Connecticut Healthcare System was officially formed in 1995. We serve veterans in Connecticut and southern New England. The West Haven facility is a tertiary care facility classified as a Clinical Referral Level I Facility. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology and a renowned research program. Comprehensive health care is provided through primary, acute, tertiary and long-term care in areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics and extended care. Newington is an ambulatory care center that provides primary and specialty care. In addition to our main campuses, we operate six community-based primary care centers throughout the state.

THIS ANNOUNCEMENT ESTABLISHES AN OPEN CONTINOUS ANNOUNCEMENT OF ELIGIBLE APPLICANTS TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION. THE "WHAT HAPPENS NEXT" AREA OF THIS ANNOUNCEMENT PROVIDES ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THE REFERRAL PROCESS FOR THIS TYPE OF ANNOUNCEMENT.

Duties

In addition to duties and assignments at the Food Service Worker WG-1 level, the WG-2 Food Service Worker performs tasks with several steps or a sequence of tasks that requires attention to work operations.  They follow set procedures in accomplishing repetitive assignments and follow an established sequence of work. Major duties include, but are not limited to:

·         Sets up cafeteria line and/or tray line station with hot and cold food items from the designated issue carts

·         Records food excess after completion of meal service and stores food items appropriately 

·         Breaks down and cleans their assigned area when the meal is finished and return food to the main kitchen

·         Sets up dining room tables for service, places food and beverages on tables, and replenishes items as necessary 

·         Brews coffee according to the number of servings required

·         Assembles and tosses fresh fruit or green salads in quantity using prepared dressings and portion into standard serving sizes  

·         Portions food into standard serving sizes using the proper utensils and containers

·         Makes cold sandwiches using prepared ingredients and packs box lunches 

·         Delivers and retrieves meal trays to the patient's bedside and the patient dining room and reports the patient's comments and complaints to the supervisor or dietitian

·         Delivers prepared pre-labeled nourishments to the patient's bedside 

·         Sets up and operates a mechanical dishwasher and pot and pan washer

·         Records dish machine/ pot and pan machine temperatures prior to each meal and reports discrepancies to the supervisor 

·         Scrapes, soaks, scours and scrubs the heavier cooking utensils such as mixing bowls and pots which because of their large size and weight are awkward to handle

·         Performs heavy-duty cleaning tasks throughout the food service and related areas

Work Schedule: 4PM-7:30PM (rotating weekends/ every 3rd weekend off).
