    VA Connecticut Healthcare System was officially formed in 1995. We serve veterans in Connecticut and southern New England. The West Haven facility is a tertiary care facility classified as a Clinical Referral Level I Facility. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology and a renowned research program. Comprehensive health care is provided through primary, acute, tertiary and long-term care in areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics and extended care. Newington is an ambulatory care center that provides primary and specialty care. In addition to our main campuses, we operate six community-based primary care centers throughout the state.

    Incumbent functions as the Executive Assistant to the Associate Director in an active and affiliated medical center. The incumbent is responsible for a broad range of activities related to the Medical Center's mission to provide quality patient care, education and research, with specific emphasis on the effective use of resources. The incumbent is responsible for facility wide planning, coordination of resources, and strategic and operational planning. Additionally, multifaceted issues that cross organizational boundaries and involve multiple facilities have made the medical center environment increasingly more complex. The addition of the performance measurements and the emphasis on attaining exceptional levels to demonstrate quality Veteran care is a considerable driver in resource planning and implementation. These issues significantly impact the delivery of patient care and services, and the recruitment and retention of staff at all levels of the organization. As the Associate Director's (AD) Executive Assistant, the incumbent is a key member of this medical center's top management and participates in top management discussions, decisions, and policy making while sharing in the responsibility for top management actions. In this capacity, the incumbent is often required to advise the Medical Center Director, Chief of Staff (COS), Assistant Director, and Associate Director for Patient Care Service (ADNPC) on behalf of the Associate Director regarding issues impacting the administrative programs of the medical center. This requires close liaison and cooperation with the administrative/clinical service line Chiefs/Service line managers. Accordingly, the incumbent is routinely relied on for key decisions in top management policy development and implementation involving complex administrative and clinical issues. Duties include, but are not limited to:

    • The incumbent serves as the Executive Assistant to the Associate Director utilizing his/her knowledge of the Medical Center's administrative practices both current and historical to assist the Associate Director
    • As the Executive Assistant to the Associate Director, the incumbent functions as the AD's Executive Officer in the management of all services reporting to the AD
    • Assesses current operations and participates in the development of new programs and policies
    • Maintains close liaison with the administrative service chiefs and to consolidated programs such as Clinical Engineering, Veterans Canteen Service, OI&T, contracting CPAC, etc., in coordinating the efforts of all the services that support the delivery of patient care, teaching and the research missions of the Medical Center
    • Participates with Associate Director in Morning Report and his/her absence report for later delivery to the AD
    • Serves as the sounding board for various service chiefs and reflects the thinking of the AD in making recommendations and commitments without benefit of consultation with the AD
