    Location of position:  Downtown, Spinal Cord Service Line

    Position Description Title/PD#:  Health Technician/GS-05-14015-A, GS-06-14016-A

    The Health Technician serves as an integral member of the Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) team for the treatment and care of Veterans with spinal cord injuries/disorders. The SCIS is an extremely specialized patient care area requiring depth and effectiveness in applying the technicians undivided attention, knowledge, skills, and abilities. 

    • Responsible for performing ADLs, completing diagnostic testing (EKGs, Urinary Bladder Scans), phlebotomy, wound care treatments, transporting of patients, tracheostomy care, complex procedures with bladder and bowel care management of Veterans with neurogenic bladder that includes catheterization, digital stimulation, colostomy and bladder irrigations, and other assigned duties.
    • Responsible for the treatment and care of spinal cord injured patients by operating setting up and positioning patient on specialized equipment for treatment, immobilizer, bowel chairs, wheel chairs, shower nets, skeletal traction, halo traction, complex immobilization devices, clinitron and kinetic beds.  
    • Removes and replaces supra/pubic catherers. Participates and follows through on a program of skin care to avoid decubitus ulcers.  Carries out bowel care procedures for patients with neurogenic bowel.  Sets up, applies and removes complex assistive/adaptive equipment.  
    • Assesses the need for possible revision abased on the patient's particular disability and its contribution to the patient's continuing progress. Participates in patient/family education programs, i.e; activities of daily living and monitors the patient/family understanding of self-treatment plan.
