    The St. Louis VAMC is a full-service health care facility providing inpatient and ambulatory care in medicine, surgery, psychiatry, neurology, and rehabilitation, as well as over 65 subspecialty areas. It is a two-division facility that serves veterans and their families in east central Missouri and southwestern Illinois.
     
    The John Cochran Division has all of the medical center's operative surgical capabilities, the ambulatory care unit, and a six-story Clinical Addition that includes surgical facilities, intensive care units, outpatient psychiatry clinics, and expanded laboratory.
     
    The Jefferson Barracks Division provides psychiatric treatment, regional spinal cord injury treatment, a nursing home care unit, geriatric health care, rehabilitation services, and a rehabilitation domiciliary program for homeless veterans.
     
    The St. Louis VA Medical Center Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) in Belleville, IL; O'Fallon, MO (St. Charles County); St. Louis, MO (North St. Louis County); and Washington, MO.

    Responsibilities

    This position reports to the Associate Director Patient Care Services

     The BCMA Coordinator/Informatics Nurse is a professional nurse who executes position responsibilities that demonstrates leadership, experience, and creative approaches to the management of complex client care. The BCMA Coordinator/Informatic Nurse must demonstrate performance and leadership that is broad enough to improve the care for a group of patients. The NI is responsible for the documented outcomes at the program or service level. Program or service level outcomes must be broad and complex and can be demonstrated at any organizational level within a facility, VISN, or VACO.

     The BCMA Coordinator/Informatic Nurse is responsible for the initial and ongoing education of clinical staff in the use of BCMA and other nursing hardware/software. This may be accomplished directly and/or with the assistance of other instructors. The incumbent will meet the educator competencies established by the organization. The BCMA coordinator/Informatics Nurse will continually review systems and process for performance and variance from established benchmarks and takes action to improve performance and reduce patient safety risks. He/She is active member of the organizational effort on high reliability, quality and safety. The incumbent uses data and information to educate frontline staff, managers and leadership.

    Duties include (but not limited to)::

     1. Develops a plan, including an implementation timeline, that prescribes strategies, alternatives, and recommendations to attain expected outcomes

    2. Guides staff in the application of critical thinking and process improvement to improve patient care.

    3. Uses advanced clinical knowledge/judgment to promote staff involvement in planning, decisionmaking, and evaluating outcomes.

    4. Functions as an expert in clinical practice and/or areas related to the assigned roles and responsibilities.

    5. Guides, develops, and supports staff from a leadership perspective.

    6. Uses professional standards of care, scientific evidence, and practice to evaluate programs/service activities.

    7. Systematically evaluates current practice. Formulates outcomes for groups of patients and/or organizational processes within area of expertise.
