    VA Connecticut Healthcare System was officially formed in 1995. We serve veterans in Connecticut and southern New England. The West Haven facility is a tertiary care facility classified as a Clinical Referral Level I Facility. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology and a renowned research program. Comprehensive health care is provided through primary, acute, tertiary and long-term care in areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics and extended care. Newington is an ambulatory care center that provides primary and specialty care. In addition to our main campuses, we operate six community-based primary care centers throughout the state.

    The Incumbent serves as the VA Connecticut Healthcare System Hazardous Materials Inventory Manager in support of the Hazardous Materials Management Program (HMMP) within the Environmental Safety & Occupational Health Service (Safety Service). Incumbent serves as the single control point and provides accountability for the requisitioning, receipt, storage, issue, reissue, disposal and usage of all hazardous materials that enter the Connecticut VAMC.
    Duties include:

    • Set up and maintain ESOH, GIP, and/or MAXIMO hazardous material inventory control points as applicable.
    • Authorized hazardous material request are entered into the approved HAZMAT tracking system, which creates an Authorized User List (AUL)
    • Reviews request for supplies and services from departments for adequate description/specifications, sufficient funds by requestor, realistic delivery requirements.
    • Ensure HAZMAT issue and usage conforms to all appropriate Green Environmental Management Systems (GEMS), Safety and Occupational Health regulatory requirements.
    • Reviews OSHA, EPA regulations, and FDA Reports; Recall Alerts/Notifications to determine if any hazardous materials supplies are in use that required being removed.
    • Reviews requests for supplies and services from departments for adequate description/specifications
    • Conduct hazardous waste inspections; assisting with management of the hazardous waste module in the ESOH database
    • Conduct education and training, job hazard assessments, exposure monitoring, inspection of spill response kits and emergency management supplies, Management of Asbestos and Lead Data Base.
    • Responsible for utilizing hazardous material compatibility storage techniques
    • Ensure general storage areas are neat and orderly, supplies are put away and rotated properly, items are identified for easy access, and receipts are processed using correct conversion factors and issue units.
    • Inventories will be bar-coded and replenishment will be done by uploading data from the bar-code scanner into the ESOH and/or GIP programs.
