The VA Salt Lake City Health Care System (VASLCHCS) is made up of compassionate employees committed to caring for Veterans whose sacrifices know no limit. We are part of the Rocky Mountain Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN 19). Our health care system consists of the George E. Wahlen Department of Veteran Affairs Medical Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, and nine community clinics across Utah, Idaho, and Nevada. We provide health care to over 50,000 eligible Veterans across one of the largest geographical areas in VA. We are a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, holistic medicine as well as education and research in partnership with the University of Utah and other institutions of higher education. Comprehensive health care is provided through our primary care providers and tertiary care is offered in areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, and geriatrics. Duties

Women Veterans Health Care addresses the health care needs of women Veterans and works to ensure that timely, equitable, high-quality, comprehensive health care services are provided in a sensitive and safe environment at VA health facilities nationwide. We strive to be a national leader in the provision of health care for women, thereby raising the standard of care for all women. To fulfill this mission, Women Veterans Health Care works to make certain that all eligible women Veterans requesting VA care are assured of: 1) Comprehensive primary care by a proficient and interested primary care provider; 2) Privacy, safety, dignity, and sensitivity to gender-specific needs; 3) The right care in the right place and time; 4) State-of-the-art health care equipment and technology; and 5) High-quality preventive and clinical care, equal to that provided to male Veterans. Come join our team and use your nursing skills to:

  • Provide basic and skilled nursing care and assistance to patients in the outpatient clinics. This may involve assistance with personal hygiene, lifting and positioning.
  • Measure, report, and document vitals signs (i.e. body temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, pulse oximeter), weight, height, blood glucose, and/or intake/output.
  • Participate as part of the multi-disciplinary teams during care and treatment planning.
  • Actively make suggestions for change.
  • Assist nursing staff and providers with maintaining clinic flow, completing assessments, setting up for and participating in treatments/examinations that require special skill, etc.
  • Demonstrate competency in independently performing specific technical skills within the outpatient setting (i.e. complex dressing changes, urinary catheter insertion, endoscopy procedures, IV insertion/venipuncture).
  • Administer medications in accordance with additional training, established policies and procedures. Observe, report and document changes in patient condition and/or behavior which may be related to medication administration.
  • Assess patient conditions, recognizes deviations from normal and notifies appropriate staff when immediate attention is necessary.
  • Assist the RN with patient admission, transfers and discharge processes as appropriate to the outpatient setting.
  • Appropriately document care given in computerized patient record system (CPRS).
  • Assist in maintaining and cleaning supplies and equipment according to facility policies and procedures and manufacturer recommendations. Restocks clinic areas as appropriate.
  • Provide a safe environment and supports patient privacy. Report unsafe equipment and conditions and adheres to infection control principles, emergency, safety and fire regulations.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to adapt to changing work situations; assist with problem solving.
  • Is accountable for maintaining therapeutic interpersonal relations with patients, families/significant others and co-workers.
  • Reinforce and reiterate instructions previously presented by the treatment team that provide the patient/family with appropriate health care information. Encourages patient participation in the treatment team by fostering self-reliance and independence and by involving the patient in their own treatment plan.
  • Respect the patient as a person, accepts the patient and their illness and keeps personal information confidential.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday; 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
