    Responsibilities

    The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) of the Mental Health and Behavioral Sciences Division, Patient Care Services Branch, will work in one of the four specialty units assigned to the Division for the W.G. "Bill" Hefner Medical Center, Salisbury, North Carolina.

    SARRTP: The Substance Abuse Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (SARRTP) Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is responsible and accountable for the provision of direct patient care and for the delivery of recovery-oriented nursing care to a diverse Veteran population.  This LPN must have a basic knowledge of the SARRTP and exercise sound reasoning that demonstrates the ability to function as a member of the SARRTP team.  

    PTSD-RRTP: The LPN in this unit provides safe and individualized nursing care to patients within the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (PTSD-RRTP) Mental Health and Behavioral Sciences Division, Patient Care Services Branch.  The incumbent will interact and collaborate with patients, families, other health care and supportive personnel, and will initiate actions based on observations of the patient's condition. 

    Acute or Sub-Acute Inpatient Psychiatry: The LPN within the Acute Inpatient Psychiatry or Sub-Acute Inpatient Psychiatry provides safe and individualized care to inpatient veterans whose immediate treatment needs require a structured 24 hour residential setting that provides all required services. The LPN of these two units will assist the Registered Nurse to provide stabilization through evaluation of behavioral, emotional, physical and other needs.

    Major Duties may include, but are not limited to:

    • Demonstrates the ability to perform independently in a self-directed manner as the charge nurse, at the full performance level (SARRTP/SIPU)
    • Develops and maintains therapeutic relationships with veterans and their families/significant others;
    • Attends treatment team meetings and collaborates with treatment team to modify the Veteran's treatment plans as clinically indicated;
    • Documents nursing plan of care in Mental Health Suite;
    • Demonstrates knowledge and appropriate skills to prepare, administer and monitor the effects of medications;
    • Recognizes the need to notify the RN/Provider based on observations of the patient's physical and mental health needs; and
    • Promotes mental health by implementing practical nursing care for behavioral problems, psychiatric disorders and co-occurring conditions to promote health and safety, symptom management.

    Work Schedule: Schedule to include days, evenings or night shifts, to include, weekends and/or holidays as required.
