Note:  The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-6. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of

GS-3 to GS-6.  The Professional Standards Board (a peer-review group) will review the selected candidate's education and experience and recommend the grade and step at which the candidate will be placed. The salary is based on the grade and step approved for the selected candidate.

Location:  Minneapolis VA Health Care System (VAHCS), Rice Lake CBOC, 2700A College Drive, Rice Lake, WI 54868


Major Responsibilities

Collects blood, urine, or other specimens in a courteous manner from clinic outpatients for a wide variety of requested laboratory and technical equipment tests, including timed specimens, fasting specimens, and peak and trough drug levels. Acts in a professional manner and ensures the patient is as comfortable as possible. This includes using special drawing techniques, assuring appropriate patient preparation, use of appropriate collection containers or tubes, and obtaining appropriate specimen volumes. Verifies the patient as the individual denoted on the request and labels all tubes/containers with the patient's name, social security number, date, and time to ensure proper identification.

Receives and/or accessions requests for laboratory and technical equipment testing, verifying the accuracy and completeness of these requests. Interacts with the appropriate clinic/hospital personnel to clarify orders or correct any discrepancies.

Controls laboratory and technical equipment supply inventory. Ensures a sufficient stock of supplies, reagents, standards, and controls are available at all times by ordering adequate quantities from commercial sources or prepares a variety of specialized solutions or reagents using established procedures.

Performs routine point of care testing procedures using manual, instrumental, or automated techniques in accordance with established protocols. Recognizes and reacts to indicators of malfunction and implements corrections. Verifies or confirms laboratory and technical equipment results and reports critical value results to the appropriate individuals as necessary.

Calibrates, standardizes, adjusts, and maintains laboratory and technical equipment and point of care instruments. Verifies correct instrument operation using established procedures and quality control checks. Identifies the cause of common problems and makes simple repairs. Consults with ancillary testing coordinator or equipment vendor to resolve issues when necessary.

Conducts quality control procedures on equipment, reagents, and products, as well as maintains proper records for quality control/quality assurance reports or reviews. Takes appropriate action to make corrections and solve problems. Keeps abreast of current developments in medical laboratory and technical equipment science and makes suggestions for improvements in technique and procedures. Communicates any concerns with supervisor or ancillary testing coordinator.

Recognizes emergency situations and takes the necessary action. Establishes priority for emergency orders. Must have current CPR/Basic Life Support certification to care for patients who become ill, arrest, or faint while having blood drawn. Recognizes any physical or mental changes in patients while they are in the laboratory and technical equipment and reports findings to appropriate personnel.

Based on demonstrated competencies, cross cover for checking in and checking out patients for Primary and Specialty services including TeleHealth as needed. Including but not limited to completing clinical reminders, medication administration, delegated procedures and treatments.

Work Schedule: Clinic Hours are Tuesday, Thursday and Fridays, 8:00am to 4:30 pm
