    Responsibilities

    The incumbent serves as Supervisory Professional Counselor on the multidisciplinary team that is located in a community-based Vet Center that provides veterans with community outreach, counseling, therapy, treatment and direct services and referral to VA and community resources and community education regarding the problems and needs of the veteran. The incumbent maintains an office in the Vet Center. Incumbent will work in cooperative collaboration with other team members and with professionals, paraprofessionals, volunteers and others in VA facilities and community agencies to help veterans recognize and resolve their problems and needs. The counseling and therapeutic services provided by the Vet Center range from routine to complex and include suicide prevention, crisis intervention, short- and long-term treatment with clients exhibiting post-traumatic stress disorder, other psychiatric disorders and/or readjustment problems.

    As a Supervisory Professional Counselor, the incumbent's primary responsibility is to provide clinical and administrative leadership, management and supervision of all Vet Center staff and all other professional, paraprofessional and nonprofessional staff assigned to work at the Vet Center and to plan, develop, implement, coordinate, monitor and evaluate all treatment services of the Vet Center. Performs the administrative and personnel management function relative to staff supervised.. Duties include but are not limited to:

    Establishes guidelines and performance expectations for staff, which are clearly communicated through the formal employee performance management system.
    Observes workers' performance; demonstrates and conducts work performance critiques. Provides informal feedback and periodically evaluates employee performance. Resolves informal complaints and grievances.

    • Develops work improvement plans, recommending personnel actions as necessary. Provides advice and counsel to workers related to work and administrative matters.
    • Effects disciplinary measures as appropriate to the authority delegated in this area. Reviews and approves or time and leave authorization for all Vet Center staff.
    • Assures that subordinates are trained and fully comply with the provisions of the safety regulations. Other duties as assigned.
    • Conducts interviews and counseling with clients and provides social/psychological assessment and treatment to clients; crisis intervention and both short and long term services.
    • Refers clients to other programs and professionals.
    • Provides guidance and consultation to other team members conducting interviews, counseling, and therapy.
    • Refers cases requiring outpatient or inpatient treatment to the VA Medical Center or Outpatient Clinic or appropriate referral services.
    • Responsible for establishing, maintaining and conducting outreach activities with veterans, community and service organizations, business and industry, professionals and the public.
    • Organizes both VA and non-VA resources and community services on behalf of veterans.
    • Other duties as assigned.
