The VA Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS) consists of three inpatient facilities located at Palo Alto, Menlo Park, and Livermore, plus seven outpatient clinics in San Jose, Fremont, Capitola, Monterey, Stockton, Modesto, and Sonora. These facilities provide some of the world's finest medical care and cutting-edge technology.

VAPAHCS is a teaching hospital with an affiliation with the Stanford University School of Medicine which provides a rich academic environment including medical training for physicians in virtually all specialties and subspecialties. Our Health Care System operates over 800 beds, including three nursing homes and a 100-bed homeless domiciliary - all to serve more than 67,000 enrolled Veterans.

Readjustment Counseling Service (RCS) is a program of the Department of Veterans Affairs created to provide a broad range of psycho-social services to combat veterans and their family members to assist them in their readjustment to civilian life. RCS provides services to eligible veterans and their family members in "storefront" counseling centers located in the communities. Vet Center services include, but are not limited to: counseling services to combat veterans from all eras, veterans sexually traumatized while on active duty, and families of service members killed on active duty. Services are also available to all eligible veterans' family members for issues related to the veteran's military service. The goal of this program is to establish and maintain an outreach program to assist those eligible veterans who have failed to make adequate psychosocial adjustment and re-entry into civilian life.

The major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducts assessment interviews, develops treatment plans and provides treatment to eligible veterans and their families, treatment modalities may include crisis intervention as well as both short and long-term services.
  • Participates in and provides consultation to other team members and participates in conjoint emergency treatment with medical facility mental health personnel.
  • Serves as a member of a multi-disciplinary Vet Center team and is responsible for coordinating and providing family counseling services in the Vet Center.
