    Summary

OUR MISSION: To fulfill President Lincoln's promise - "To care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow, and his orphan" - by serving and honoring the men and women who are America's Veterans. How would you like to become a part of a team providing compassionate care to Veterans?

Congress established the Vet Center Program in 1979 out of recognition that a significant number of veterans were still experiencing readjustment problems. Vet Centers are community based and part of the Department of Veterans Affairs. In April 1991, in response to the Persian Gulf War, Congress extended the eligibility to veterans who served during other periods of armed hostilities. Those other periods of armed hostilities are identified as World War II, Korea, Lebanon, Grenada, Panama, the Persian Gulf, Somalia, Iraq and the Global War On Terrorism (GWOT). The goal of the Vet Center program is to provide a broad range of counseling, outreach and referral services FREE of charge to eligible veterans in order to help them make a satisfying post-war readjustment to civilian life. You are not forgotten.

In addition, Public Law 103-452 authorizes sexual trauma counseling for veterans who have experienced acts of sexual violence or harassment while on active duty.

    Responsibilities

Readjustment Counseling Service (RCS) is a program of the Department of Veterans Affairs created to provide a broad range of psycho-social services to combat veterans and their family members to assist them in their readjustment to civilian life. RCS provides services to eligible veterans and their family members in "storefront" counseling centers located in the communities. Vet Center services include, but are not limited to: counseling services to combat veterans from all eras, veterans sexually traumatized while on active duty, and families of service members killed on active duty. Services are also available to all eligible veterans' family members for issues related to the veteran's military service. The goal of this program is to establish and maintain an outreach program to assist those eligible veterans who have failed to make adequate
psychosocial adjustment and re-entry into civilian life. The Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in RCS serves as a member of a multi-disciplinary Vet Center team and is responsible for coordinating and providing family counseling services in the Vet Center. The LMFT conducts assessment interviews, develops treatment plans and provides treatment to eligible veterans and their families. Treatment modalities
may include crisis intervention as well as both short and long-term services. The LMFT may refer clients to other programs and professionals to include the VA Medical Center or Outpatient Clinic. Participates in and provides consultation to other team members; participates in conjoint emergency treatment with medical facility mental health personnel.

In addition to the basic requirements, the GS-11 full performance level requires completion of a minimum of 1 year of postmaster's degree experience in the field of health care marriage and family therapy work (VA or non-VA experience) and licensure in a state at the independent practice level.
