    The Iron Mountain VA Medical Center (http://www.ironmountain.va.gov/) is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and is part of the VA's Great Lakes Health Care System in the Veteran's Integrated Service Network (VISN 12). The medical center and its community clinics serve eligible veterans in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (fifteen counties) and Northeast Wisconsin (eleven counties).

    This facility employs state-of-the-art telemedicine technology, and is a leader in rural health care delivery in VHA. Ambulatory and acute primary and secondary health care is provided in areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, non-invasive cardiology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics, and extended care. We are part of the Veterans Integrated Services Network (VISN 12) which includes facilities in Milwaukee, Madison, Tomah, WI; and Chicago, Hines and North Chicago, IL. Outpatient clinics are located in Ironwood, Marquette, Hancock, Menominee, Manistique, and Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan; and Rhinelander, WI.

    Responsibilities

    This Mason position is located in the Maintenance and Repair Section, Engineering Service of the Oscar G. Johnson VAMC Iron Mountain, MI. The primary duties consist of masonry, carpentry, and locksmith duties. The incumbent is responsible for accomplishing journeyman level work in the trades of mason, carpenter, and locksmith. This work involves construction, alteration, repair, or modifications of items and structures assigned by the Maintenance and Repair (M&R) Supervisor.
    Major Duties:

    • Constructs concrete footings, foundations, and floor slabs from design drawings, blueprints, or sketches.
    • Installs anchor and structural and reinforcement steel such as bars, stirrups, spacer rods and mesh by bending and spacing according to specifications.
    • Lays brick, building block, stone and other materials including ceramic and quarry tile.
    • Cuts, trims, faces and surfaces masonry material to proper sizes and shapes using various masonry tools.
    • Waterproofs and damp proofs walls extending into wet soil by applying compounds.
    • Prepares mortar and concrete.
    • Determines types of mortar or concrete required and prepares material in proportions and amounts required.
    • Performs minor construction and repair on existing structures involving standard measurements, specifications, instructions and basic shop mathematics.
    • Constructs, installs or repairs items such as scaffolds, panels, bins, pallets, concrete forms, dry walls, sheathing and roof decking.
    • Installs exterior and interior trim using preplanned materials such as baseboard, molding and fascia boards.
    • Replaces broken or missing acoustical ceilng tile, broken door and window trim, window screens, stairways steps, railings, siding, door jambs, other damaged wood components, and finishes hardware.
    • Interprets specifications such as work orders with sketches or easily understood blueprints and technical instructions in order to plan and lay out work.
    • Determines the proper tools, material and equipment required for the job, installing and repairing construction projects according to instructions and specifications and producing finished products that meet established standards.
    • Prepares and cuts doors to receive lock sets, install lock sets, change lock sets, cut keys, build locks from basic cylinder to meet diversified requirements for special keying needs.
    • Utilizes key tracking software; data entry and lock/key date verification.
    • Performs general cleaning/housekeeping of area and other related duties as assigned.
    Work schedule: Full time, Monday through Friday, 1st shift with a tour of 7:00am to 3:30pm or 8:00am to 4:30pm
