    Responsibilities

    This announcement is for a Medical Instrument Technician (Diagnostic Ultrasound) with the Kansas City VA Medical Center. The incumbent independently performs standard examinations and maintains accurate and detailed records of patients examined.

    Major duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

    **Advises radiologists or referring physicians of significant abnormalities that would require their immediate attention and visualization while the patient is undergoing examination.

    **Performs ultrasound examinations of the abdomen, neck, chest and extremities, retroperitoneal space for the purpose of acquiring high quality examinations that assists in the diagnosis and treatment of patient medical disorders.

    **Participates in the training of students, radiology technicians, and others so that these individuals may acquire an understanding of the principles of ultrasound and how it relates to other diagnostic exams.

    **Performs routine clerical procedures for the purpose of maintaining accurate ultrasound records so that easy recall of patient examination may be achieved.

    **Maintains adequate supplies so that examinations are not delayed due to lack of necessary equipment and supplies.

    **Assists the Radiologist in the performance of cyst punctures, aspiration biopsies, and catheter placements for the purpose of diagnostic treatment using ultrasound techniques.

    **Develops and maintains patient prep procedures so that patients and wards understand the proper preparations for ultrasound examinations in an effort to minimize delays of examinations.

    **Explains examinations to be performed to the patients so that the purpose of the study as well as any requirements of the patients is thoroughly understood.

    **Assists quality assurance technologists in performing quality assurance testing on the ultrasound unit using phantoms, test tools, tech check lists,etc. for the purpose of assuring peak performance of the ultrasound equipment.

    **Performs or supervises routine housekeeping duties that the ultrasound area is clean and sanitary.

    Work Schedule: Intermittent/PRN. Various tours. May be required to work shifts with short notice (leave coverage for weekday shifts).
