    VA Connecticut Healthcare System was officially formed in 1995. We serve veterans in Connecticut and southern New England. The West Haven facility is a tertiary care facility classified as a Clinical Referral Level I Facility. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology and a renowned research program. Comprehensive health care is provided through primary, acute, tertiary and long-term care in areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics and extended care. Newington is an ambulatory care center that provides primary and specialty care. In addition to our main campuses, we operate six community-based primary care centers throughout the state.

    Responsibilities

    Echocardiography technician assignment as a GS 6 level is responsible for performing routine, standardized cardiac ultrasound examinations under the supervision of a fully qualified cardiac sonographer.  Technician must have knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the heart and great vessels, cardiac arrhythmias and their relationships to hemodynamic conditions of the cardiac cycle. 

    • Sets up and adjusts ultrasound equipment.
    • Obtain standard basic high quality transthoracic echocardiographic images (according to guidelines of American Society of Echocardiography) including 2-dimensional and M-mode of valvular function with use of standard Doppler and color Doppler techniques.
    • Uses available computer system for image transfer and display for viewing and reporting by cardiologists and archive in medical records. 
    • Educates patients on procedure and answers all questions.
    • Works under the guidance and assists (within scope) of a fully qualified cardiac sonographer.

    Echocardiography technician assignment as a GS 7 level is responsible independently conduct difficult but standardized echocardiographic examinations.  The technician will scan transthoracic echocardiograms in all views with color flow and some Doppler, conduct cardiac testing to determine the severity and variety of cardiac problems, set up for TEE, set up and adjust the ultrasound equipment to meet the conditions of the examination and the patient and to operate the equipment for more complex, but standardized procedures. 

    • Sets up and calibrates all instruments prior to procedure.
    • Obtains standard basic high quality transthoracic echocardiographic images (according to guidelines of American Society of Echocardiography) including 2-dimensional and M-mode of valvular function with use of standard Doppler and color Doppler techniques.
    • Uses available computer system for image transfer and display for viewing and reporting by cardiologist and archive in medical records.
    • Educates patients on procedure and answers all questions.
    • Keeps an accurate record of tests, approved daily logs, and videotapes.  Also, maintains cidex logs.

    Echocardiography technician assignment at GS 8 level is responsible for performing echocardiography exams which range from the routine to the complex in all echocardiography modalities(as described below).

    • Varied administrative, staff development and supervisory functions, which may require problem solving, communication and writing skills, as well as knowledge of regulatory and industry compliance and accreditation issues.

    Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am-4:30 pm
