    VA Connecticut Healthcare System was officially formed in 1995. We serve veterans in Connecticut and southern New England. The West Haven facility is a tertiary care facility classified as a Clinical Referral Level I Facility. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology and a renowned research program. Comprehensive health care is provided through primary, acute, tertiary and long-term care in areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics and extended care. Newington is an ambulatory care center that provides primary and specialty care. In addition to our main campuses, we operate six community-based primary care centers throughout the state.

    This position is located in the Radiology / Ultrasound section at the West Haven VA campus. The incumbent is a registered ultrasound technologist who has current certification from the Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography.  Duties include but are not limited to:

    ·         Performs complex ultrasound examinations including abdominal, renal, gyn and small parts scanning, Doppler exams, etc.

    ·         Performs computer work and completes required forms associated with patient exams, complications and/or quality improvement activities.

    ·         The incumbent is responsible for the quality assurance of the image (positioning/label/technique/network information) prior to transmission to the PAC's network.

    ·         Schedules exams in a manner so as to optimize scanner times while maintaining flexibility for emergency cases. This requires the ability to prioritize scheduled patients as well as the ability to accommodate the emergency patient.

    ·         Confers with radiologists to determine requirement of nonstandard exams.

    ·         Adheres to hospital infection control and safety policies/techniques with emphasis on sterile technique; the storage of sterile supplies; the disposal of body fluids and "sharps"; proper attire; hand washing practices; and continuing education.

    ·         Maintains records and files of exams performed on patients.

    ·         Properly identifies patient images.

    ·         Responsible to explain exams to competent patients so that patients understand what is to be done as well as what hazards, if any, are possible.

    ·         Performs irregular hour emergency scans on standby/on call, 24 hours per day coverage.

    ·         Other duties as assigned.

    Work Schedule: Varies Monday-Friday between 7:30 am – 6:30 pm, position includes weekend, holiday, and on-call coverage.
