Summary

The Indian Health Service (IHS) is the principal federal health care provider and health advocate for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN). The IHS goal is to raise Indian health status to the highest possible level. IHS provides leadership and direction to programs and activities designed to improve health outcomes to over 1.9 million AI/AN through a system of IHS, Tribal, and Urban operated facilities and programs.

The IHS is required by law to give absolute preference to qualified applicants who meet the Secretary of the Interior's definition of Indian for appointment to vacancies within the IHS in accordance with established IHS policy as outlined in the Indian Health Manual Part 7, Chapter 3. This is an "Open Continuous Vacancy Announcement" and applications will be referred when vacancies occur. Applications will remain eligible for three (3) months from the time the application is received and allows acceptance of applications with eligible applicants referred for consideration. Candidates with a complete application will be considered for vacancies that match the geographic locations, specialties, and/or job preferences.

WHO MAY BE CONSIDERED: U.S. Citizens, Current and Former competitive service Federal employees, active U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, Indian Preference and Veteran Preference candidates.

APPOINTMENT: Positions may be filled as Permanent, Term or Temporary appointments. The Agency has the option of extending Term appointments for up to 4 years.

WORK SCHEDULE: Positions may be filled as Full-time, Part-time, or Intermittent work schedules. Positions may be filled at ANY of the grade levels indicated in this announcement, without promotion potential as vacancies occur.

TITLE 38 MARKET PAY: $140,000 - $325,000 per annum. Specific salary information for medical specialties:

Internal Medicine, Primary Care, Pediatrics, Family Practice, Infectious Disease Physician up to $215,000 per annum.

OB/GYN, Psychiatry up to $240,000 per annum.

Ophthalmology up to $300,000 per annum.

General Surgery, Radiology, Anesthesiology up to $325,000 per annum

This position requires that you obtain and maintain clinical privileges. If they are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee may be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from the Federal service.

Duties

Responsible for the practice of medicine or direct service to patients involving the performance of diagnostic, preventative, or therapeutic services to patients in hospitals and clinics.

Prescribe or administer treatment, therapy, medication, vaccination, and other specialized medical care to treat, prevent illness, disease, or injury.

Order, perform, and interpret tests and analyze records, reports, and examination information to diagnose patient's condition.

Collect, record, and maintain patient information, such as medical history, reports, and examinations results. Experience with electronic health records is preferred.

Monitor patients' conditions and progress and reevaluate treatments as necessary.

Explain procedures and discuss test results or prescribed treatments with patients.

Refer patients to medical specialists or other practitioners when necessary.

Coordinate work with nurses, pharmacists, social workers, and other allied health professionals in the provision of a variety of health services.

  • Relocation expenses may or may not be authorized. This requires a one year service agreement. Failure to fulfill the one year service agreement may result in repayment of relocation expenses.
