Serves as a Medical Officer (Psychiatry) with the Shiprock Service Unit of the Navajo Area Indian Health Service (NAIHS), Iina' Counseling Services, that involves performance of mental health services for individual adults, couples, families and groups of adults as well as for child and adolescents to extent of psychiatric training and clinical experiences. Work sites include hospitals, health centers and clinics, designated health care facilities, and community and home settings.  Incumbent reports to the Iina' Counseling Services Director.

The IHS is required by law to give absolute preference to qualified applicants who meet the Secretary of the Interior's definition of Indian for appointment to vacancies within the IHS in accordance with established IHS policy as outlined in the Indian Health Manual Part 7, Chapter 3. Duties

  • Responsible for the full range of clinical evaluation of the patient's condition and for one or more of a broad range of psychiatric treatment activities. Clinical evaluation involves responsibility for formulation of working diagnoses based upon the patient's personal history, appraisal of the patients psychiatric and physical status an assessment evaluation.
  • The health care provided requires recognition of diseases, mental illnesses and other behavioral and psychosocial problems which may require collaboration with other health care providers, and which may be difficult to discover or identify. Assignments include providing consultation to others in mental health and social services, to tribal programs and other Indian Health Service (IHS) specialists.
  • Assumes responsibility for the diagnosis, therapy, maintenance, prevention and rehabilitation of adult and minor individual patients, couples, families, and groups of patients in the capacity of specialist. Interviews and examines patients, review past history, and requests or performs diagnostic tests and examination deemed necessary to obtain all adequate database for sound medical management. Provides consultation and/or co-management to other IHS providers and other physicians providing health services to IHS eligible patients.
  • Actively participates on the multi-disciplinary team of the Iina' Counseling Services. Assists the Mental Health Program Director in administering the program and achieving program goals.
  • Refers patients to appropriate contracted medical/psychiatric or other mental health care to other Public Health Service (PHS) or public facilities.
  • Provides emergency psychiatric consultation when requested by the physician on call.
