    Summary

    VA Connecticut Healthcare System was officially formed in 1995. We serve veterans in Connecticut and southern New England. The West Haven facility is a tertiary care facility classified as a Clinical Referral Level I Facility. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology and a renowned research program. Comprehensive health care is provided through primary, acute, tertiary and long-term care in areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics and extended care. Newington is an ambulatory care center that provides primary and specialty care. In addition to our main campuses, we operate six community-based primary care centers throughout the state.

    Responsibilities

    The incumbent functions as a Medical Supply Technician conducting the sterilization and processing of Reusable Medical Equipment at the West Haven Campus. Duties include but are not limited to:

    ·         Collects contaminated case carts from operating rooms as well as other clinics as required.

    ·         Decontaminates and inspects the instruments prior to sterilization by hand washing or by use of the washer sanitizer.

    ·         Inspects and insures bio-burden is removed prior to ultrasonic and machine washing.

    ·         Uses judgement in examining items for defects, damage and cleanliness.

    ·         Processes contaminated rigid and flexible endoscopes.  Uses Automated Endoscope Reprocessor (AER), and completes proper documentation.

    ·         Assembles a full range of instrument sets and trays used throughout the medical center.

    ·         Incumbent ensures that instrument is assembled appropriately, inspecting for function and cleanliness prior to wrapping and final sterilization.

    ·         Incumbent is able to identify the correct method of sterilization for each instrument and/or piece of equipment (Steam/Sterrad).

    ·         Assembles case carts for procedures. Incumbent utilizes procedure instrument list to supply case carts.

    ·         Replenishes consumables in the sterile processing area routinely to ensure supplies are available at all times. Ensures that par levels of instruments and equipment are maintained at all times.

    Work Schedule: 3pm- 11:30pm/ Mon-Fri & Rotating call for nights, weekends and holidays.
