    VA Connecticut Healthcare System was officially formed in 1995. We serve veterans in Connecticut and southern New England. The West Haven facility is a tertiary care facility classified as a Clinical Referral Level I Facility. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology and a renowned research program. Comprehensive health care is provided through primary, acute, tertiary and long-term care in areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics and extended care. Newington is an ambulatory care center that provides primary and specialty care. In addition to our main campuses, we operate six community-based primary care centers throughout the state.

    VACT Healthcare system is seeking a full-time Medical Technician. The position will be located at the West Haven campus. Duties include but are not limited to:

    • Works in central processing (CP) and/or anatomic pathology (AP) performing specimen processing, referral lab send-outs, phlebotomy and rapid test procedures
    • Performs testing procedures on a variety of biological specimens and/or environmental samples using manual or automated techniques with minimal supervision
    • Receives specimens submitted for clinical or pathologic examination and evaluates the acceptability of each specimen, documents discrepancies and resolves potential problems
    • Uses problem solving skills to identify and correct any problems arising with the received specimens
    • Utilizes centrifuges, automated processors, automated histology equipment, refrigerators and freezers and records maintenance data and temperature readings in the appropriate log/chart
    • Assures proper processing of tissue specimens, especially those requiring special handling (e.g. direct immunofluorescence, tissue submitted for frozen section or quantitative analysis)
    • Accurately labels cassettes for the gross run in the proper format and color per SOP
    • Prior to a phlebotomy assignment the incumbent works from requisitions, computerized phlebotomy lists and instructions or other verbal requests to obtain and collect patient's blood understanding all urgencies and performs data entry associated with phlebotomy.
    • Properly labels specimen containers and paperwork and records specimens onto the appropriate logs.
    Work schedule: Monday- Friday with rotating weekends and holidays and rotating shifts (6am-2:30pm, 7am-3:30pm, 8am-4:30pm, 8:30am-5pm or 9am-5:30pm as needed)
