VA Connecticut Healthcare System was officially formed in 1995. We serve veterans in Connecticut and southern New England. The West Haven facility is a tertiary care facility classified as a Clinical Referral Level I Facility. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology and a renowned research program. Comprehensive health care is provided through primary, acute, tertiary and long-term care in areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics and extended care. Newington is an ambulatory care center that provides primary and specialty care. In addition to our main campuses, we operate six community-based primary care centers throughout the state.

Duties

VA Connecticut is seeking two (2) full-time Medical Technicians.  The position will be located in the central processing (CP) and/or anatomic pathology (AP) sections of the Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service (P&LMS).  Duties include but are not limited to:

·   Performs specimen processing, referral lab send-outs, phlebotomy and rapid test procedures

·   Performs tests on a variety of biological specimens and/or environmental samples using manual or automated techniques

·   Receives specimens submitted for clinical or pathologic examination and evaluates the acceptability of each specimen, documents discrepancies and resolves potential problems

·   Acknowledges specimens received from inside and outside locations in the LIS system, verifying pertinent information as detailed in the SOP

·   Records samples and properly processes all patient specimens that come into the CP and/or AP lab, including but not limited to microbiology, virology, blood and body fluids, histology and cytology specimens

·   Utilizes centrifuges, automated processors automated histology equipment, refrigerators and freezers and records maintenance data and temperature readings in the appropriate log/chart

·   Assures proper processing of tissue specimens, especially those requiring special handling

·   Properly labels specimen containers and paperwork and records specimens into the appropriate logs

·   Determines where and in what manner specimens will be sent out and assembles mailing containers, packs specimen(s) in biosafety container(s), labels with shipping company labels

·   Keeps inventory of consumables, supplies and reagents and notifies superiors when levels are low and need to be ordered

·   Assists in training newly hired staff, medical students residents and/or other staff who are orienting to the CP and/or AP processing areas of the laboratory

·   Files, retrieves and audits the records of AP or CP according to the request for information

·   Evaluates the validity of data in relation to the test system and accepted assay procedures to assure that the patent results are accurate

·   Adheres to and complies with all Health Administration and Veterans Medical Center regulations and policies

Work Schedule: Monday- Friday with rotating weekends and holidays/ Rotating shifts 8am-4:30pm, 9am-5:30pm and other shifts as needed
