VA Connecticut Healthcare System was officially formed in 1995. We serve veterans in Connecticut and southern New England. The West Haven facility is a tertiary care facility classified as a Clinical Referral Level I Facility. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology and a renowned research program. Comprehensive health care is provided through primary, acute, tertiary and long-term care in areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics and extended care. Newington is an ambulatory care center that provides primary and specialty care. In addition to our main campuses, we operate six community-based primary care centers throughout the state.

VA Connecticut is seeking a full-time Medical Technologist (Core Lab Generalist) in our Path and Lab Service.  This position will be filled at our West Haven campus.  Duties include but are not limited to:

·   Accesses and processes all manner of specimens that come into the lab including but not limited to those sent from other labs, histology, microbiology and cytology specimens which may involve the prompt shipment of incoming specimens or thee distribution of specimens from processing within the laboratory.

·   Evaluates and prepares specimen for analysis, insuring that the physiologic state of the specimen properties are maintained.

·   Selects, performs, evaluates and monitors the performance of test procedures using manual and/or instrumental techniques in accordance with established protocols.  Recognizes and reacts to indicators of malfunction; locates and implements corrections.

·   Conducts quality control procedures on equipment, reagents and products and maintains proper records for quality control reports.

·   Calibrates, standardizes, adjusts and maintains instruments.  Verifies correct instrument operation using established procedures and quality control checks and monitoring.

·   Evaluates the validity of data in relation to the test system and accepted assay procedures; correlates quantitative data with patient data to verify results.

·   Performs additional tests to clarify or confirm abnormal patient results; recognizes abnormal results that require immediate attention by the physician and reports them directly.

·   Adhere to and maintain 100% compliance with all safety practices, procedures, dress code PPE protocols and corrects any hazards that exist.

·   Responsible for the generation of laboratory results from the work area into the laboratory computer system.

·   Incumbent will perform other directly related duties, as assigned/ required.

Work Schedule: Monday- Friday/ 12 midnight to 8:30am with rotating weekends and holidays
