    VA Connecticut Healthcare System was officially formed in 1995. We serve veterans in Connecticut and southern New England. The West Haven facility is a tertiary care facility classified as a Clinical Referral Level I Facility. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology and a renowned research program. Comprehensive health care is provided through primary, acute, tertiary and long-term care in areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics and extended care. Newington is an ambulatory care center that provides primary and specialty care. In addition to our main campuses, we operate six community-based primary care centers throughout the state.

    VA Connecticut is seeking a full-time Medical Technologist in our Path and Lab Service.  This position will be filled at our West Haven campus.  Duties include but are not limited to:

    ·   The incumbent serves as an expert in providing authoritative advice and consultation for more difficult, complex, or unique tests requiring special knowledge in molecular pathology with responsibility for performing procedures in all aspects of laboratory testing, with emphasis on molecular testing, including DNA and RNA isolation, amplification and detection, infectious disease testing and viral load analysis.

    ·   Works independently and is given freedom of action under the general guidance of a pathologist or other laboratory practitioner.

    ·   Develops, performs, evaluates, interprets, correlates and validates the accuracy of laboratory procedures and results

    ·   Performs testing procedures on a variety of biological specimens using manual or automated techniques.

    ·   Monitors quality control systems and measures.

    ·   Collaborates in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.

    ·   Provides education for laboratory and other healthcare professionals, and others in the medical center setting including the public.

    ·   Applies new scientific/ technical developments and theories to laboratory testing.

    ·   Evaluates the suitability of specimens for analysis, requesting new specimens if determined to be unusable.  Prepares specimens for analysis, ensuring that the physiologic state of the specimen properties is maintained.  Specimen preparation involves DNA extraction from blood, tissues, viral RNA extraction from serum or plasma.

    ·   Selects, performs, evaluates and monitors the performance of test procedures using manual or instrumental techniques in accordance with established protocols.  Recognizes and reacts to indicators of malfunction to locate and implement corrections. 

    ·   Writes policies, research reports and procedures.  Keeps policies & procedure manuals and research records up to date.

    Work Schedule:  Monday- Friday/ 8am-4:30pm with occasional weekends and holidays.
