    Responsibilities

    The New Mexico VA Health Care System (NMVAHCS) Behavioral Health Care Line is seeking a qualified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner to provide overnight psychiatry services in the emergency department, behavioral health units, and acute medical/surgical units (as needed). The incumbent will be part of the Mental Health Urgent/Emergent Care (BEACON) team composed of highly skilled Advance Practice Providers (NP/PA), and a consultative psychiatrist. The BEACON program's primary mission is to provide psychiatric consultation to patients with urgent or emergent mental health needs presenting in the Emergency Department 365 days per year / 24 hours per day and during business hours in a walk-in clinic setting; and inpatient psychiatric consultative liaison services. The incumbent will practice independently within his/her scope of practice/clinical privileges and collaborate as needed with the on-call attending psychiatrist.

    The incumbent will use advanced, independent clinical judgment and evidence-based treatment strategies to provide assessment and treatment for veterans with acute or chronic mental illness including treatment with psychotropic medications, brief psychotherapy, crisis intervention, case management and consultation with other mental health and specialty care professionals. The primary goal of this position is to promote veteran health behaviors and provide health care to veterans that will meet all standards of quality management and quality improvement and be efficient and cost effective. The incumbent, serving as a veteran advocate, will assess and promote the health and wellness needs of all veterans across the lifespan through planning, organizing, coordinating, directing, and evaluating facility services and programs including educational programs.  

    Activities during tour of duty include but are not limited to:

    • Assessment, diagnosis and treatment of mental health problems including initiating and adjusting therapeutic regimens, ordering diagnostics and therapeutic tests/studies, initiating consults and referrals and prescribing medications and supplies in accordance with VA policy, VA formulary and State Regulations.
    • Emergency psychiatry evaluations in the ED including disposition and treatment planning.
    • Inpatient psychiatric admission evaluations, writing admission orders.
    • Prescribing psychotropic and non-psychotropic medications and ordering laboratory studies as necessary.
    • Evaluation and management of patients admitted to psychiatric inpatient services as needed.
    • Responding to psychiatric crisis calls on behavioral health units, the emergency department and medical/surgical units.
    • Responding to Psychiatric Consult Liaison requests from medicine/surgical inpatient units.
    • Supervision of graduate students and trainee.
