Duties

The Sioux Falls VA Health Care System is currently recruiting for a Full-time, Permanent, Nurse Practitioner. This position will be located in the Primary and Specialty Medicine Service Line in the Endocrinology clinic. As a Nurse Practitioner, you are responsible for the following duties to include, but not limited to:

  • Leads and organizes delivery of care to assure continuity of care and peer accountability for practice, including access to care and discharge planning.
  • Displays courtesy, empathy, tact, and respect for Veterans, families/significant others, and hospital staff.
  • Collaborates with Veterans, families, health care practitioners, and health care leaders in policy and program development, implementation, and evaluation, as well as in the delivery of care.
  • Provides comprehensive management of the complex diabetic population, including oversight of the insulin pump program.
  • Provides expertise and provides leadership to support the facility's American Diabetes Association accreditation.
  • Serves as an expert in complex diabetic management, educating and mentoring staff.
  • Performs as a Licensed Independent Practitioner (LIP) under approved privileges.
  • Manages new and unstable insulin pump patients.
  • Approves all new initiation of Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) therapy and interprets CGM data and adjusts the treatments as indicated.
  • Manages chronic endocrine patients.
  • Approves all new initiation of CGM therapy based upon VHA guidelines.
  • Reviews and updates Outpatient Diabetes Case Management in collaboration with the Endocrinology staff, facility CDEs and Diabetes Advisory Committee.
  • Serves as facility liaison to external resources as related to diabetic and endocrinology services.
  • Engages in quality improvement projects as needed to ensure sustained quality of care for high-risk populations.
  • Provides endocrinology consultation, including diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the thyroid, parathyroid glands, pancreas, adrenals and pituitary.
  • Serves on the facility's Diabetes Advisory Committee.
  • Serves as a resource to members of the health care team, providing consultation and education as needed.
  • Actively participates in Department level quality improvement processes and initiatives.
  • Performs physical exams and prescribes.
  • Orders and interprets diagnostic tests.

NOTE: Assignment to other areas of the service line, medical center, or other CBOC's may be required. The Nurse Practitioner - Endocrinolgy reports to the Associate Chief of Specialty Medicine and works in collaboration with his/her assigned CORE team, however, assignments may be made to other areas for purposes of cross coverage.

Work Schedule: The tour of duty for this position is routinely five administrative days per week.  Additional information about the tour of duty will be discussed in the interview.
