    Responsibilities

    The Mental Health Service at the Detroit VA Medical Center is a large inter-professional service that provides comprehensive MH services to Veterans. The Service has several clinical sections and provides a variety of clinical services. The MH Nurse Practitioner position will be primarily based in the outpatient clinic, within the Behavioral Health Inter-professional Program (BHIP). Our BHIP teams include psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers, psychologists, peer specialists, clinical chaplains, SUD specialists, housing specialists, and trainees from a variety of disciplines. The primary clinical responsibility of the incumbent will involve caring for those with MH and Substance Use disorders within the context of the inter-professional team. This position will include management of a panel of patients (continuity of care) and provision of Same Day Services (non Emergent) within our MH walk in clinic.

    *The incumbent will balance management of a primary case load of Veterans, with providing walk-in services in our general MH clinic. In addition, based on coverage needs, there may be assigned clinical duties within other MH programs, such as Consultation-Liaison, Emergency Psychiatry, Inpatient Psychiatry or integrated MH services.

    *Orders and interprets findings of relevant diagnostic and laboratory tests.
    *Identifies both typical and atypical presentations of psychiatric and medical disorders and other related health problems.

    *Plans care to minimize the development of complications and promote function and quality of life using treatment modalities.*Prescribes psychotropic and medical medications based on clinical indicators of a patient's status, including results of diagnostic and lab tests as appropriate, to treat symptoms of psychiatric and medical disorders and improve functional health status.

    *Collaborates as a member of the interdisciplinary mental health and other health care team(s).
    *Provides consultation to health care providers and others to enhance quality and cost-effective services for patients and to effect change in organizational systems.

    NOTE:  THERE IS A REQUIREMENT TO PARTICIPATE IN THE SEASONAL INFLUENZA PROGRAM
