    Salary/Grade Level Determination: Your salary and grade will be determined by the Nurse Professional Standards Board (NPSB).  The NPSB is a peer review process.  The NPSB will review your individual qualifications, education, professional training/internship(s) and professional experience to determine the most appropriate salary and grade based on your individual accomplishments.  The recommended salary may be at any point in the range listed for this vacancy.  If position is filled by reassignment, individual selected will retain grade and step of position currently held.

    Responsibilities

    The VA Eastern Kansas Health Care system (EKHCS) is a tertiary care health system providing Emergency Care, Inpatient and Outpatient Care, Research, Domiciliary Care, Nursing Home Care, and Geriatric Care to a 45-county primary service area which spans throughout Northeastern and Central Kansas and Missouri. EKHCS consists of two divisions: the Colmery-O'Neil Medical Center in Topeka, Kansas, and the Dwight D. Eisenhower Medical Center, located in Leavenworth, Kansas, as well as multiple Community Based Outpatient Clinics across the service area.

    This vacancy announcement is for one (1) position with the Behavioral Health Service of the VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System and will be stationed at the Topeka campus. In this role, you will function as a Nurse Practitioner outpatient Mental Health Treatment Program, which is part of the EKHCS Psychiatric Section.

    Major duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Complete outpatient psychiatric assessments and follow-up care
    • Conducts and documents findings on initial, periodic, episodic, and/or annual health histories and/or MSE's, and/or physical examinations on patients seen in the clinical setting
    • Documents findings and follow-up of all care provided, using the VAEKHCS electronic medical record, dictating notes and summaries as required, and seeking proper countersignature, when indicated
    • Orders and/or intreprets appropriate lab tests, x-rays, EKGs, and other diagnostic studies/procedures as appropriate for diagnosing and/or medication management
    • Detects and evaluates any significant change in patients' medical and/or psychiatric condition, treating as indicated
    • Reviews medications for clinical need, simplification and possible drug-drug interactions and adjusts as indicated
    • Collaborates with the client/family to establish physical, mental, cultural and environmental factors that facilitate or impede realistic goals and activities
    • Provides education and counseling of the patient and the patient's family in preventive care, medical and/or psychiatric conditions and the use of prescribed treatment and drugs
    • Maintains phone contact with patients, families and home care agencies as indicated
    • Maintains updated Problem List and current health status for each patient visit as evidenced by interim progress notes and summaries in patient's medical record
    • Serves as a mentor, consultant and coordinator for nurses and other health care professionals in clinics, hospital units, and home/extended care if such service operates in VAEKHCS and assignment includes this responsibility
    • Coordinates health care services; participates on committees and professional groups
    • Participate in quality assurance programs

    Work Schedule: Primary Monday-Friday day shift, however incumbent may be responsible for providing on-call coverage and coverage on off-tours (including nights, weekends and holidays) based on the needs of the organization.  The incumbent may be asked to assist in other sub-specialty areas within the department.
