    The Kansas City Missouri Veterans Affairs Medical Center (KCVA) currently has three openings for Nursing Assistants in the Emergency Department (ED) of the Primary Care Service Line.

    The incumbent serves as a Nursing Assistant in the Emergency Department (ED) of the Primary Care Service Line.  The incumbent supports the nursing staff/providers with care of patients presenting to the ED.  They may be required to float to the Primary Care clinics and /or inpatient units to assist with the same type of patient care.  The individual plans and carries out patient assignments independently under general supervision of the RN, provider or Nurse Manager.  Duties include, but are not limited to:

    · Performs temperature, blood pressure, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation measurements.

    · Performs 12 lead EKG's under < 10 minutes according to ED performance measures.

    · Performs phlebotomy according to procedure in timely manner in accordance with ED and hospital standards. Labels specimens according to hospital standards and using dual identifiers.

    · Properly uses glucometer, vital signs equipment and EKG machine. Follows OSHA guidelines for proper handling of all specimens.

    · Ensures patient safety by following appropriate safety measures/ and using correct equipment to prevent patient and /or employee injury, i.e.: overhead lifts, wheelchair lifts, hover mat during transfer of patients. Make rounds throughout the ED and addresses needs of the patient within nursing assistance scope of practice. Provides direct personal and hygienic to all categories of patients including those in strict isolation.

    · Performs patient care procedures such as collection of specimens, applying simply dressings, catheter changes, EKG, splints.

    · Maintains adequate stock of supplies. Works closely with TSS to ensure par level for supplies is adequate.

    · Escorts patients to and from radiology, CT, inpatient units when patient is not on telemetry monitor.

    · Perform other duties as assigned by RN, Team Leader and/or Nurse Manager of the ED.

    Work Schedule: six 12 hours shifts (7:30am – 8:00pm, or 9:00am – 5:30pm, 1:30pm – 2:00am), and one 8-hour shift.  The shifts include weekends and holidays.
