    Summary

    The VA St. Louis Health Care System is a 2 Campus, full-service tertiary referral center, with 4 Community Based Outpatient Clinics, providing advanced inpatient and ambulatory care in medicine, surgery, psychiatry, neurology, and rehabilitation, as well as over 65 subspecialty areas including the VA's busiest interventional cardiac program, interventional radiology and radiation oncology.  The health care system provides a full continuum of recovery focused Mental Health Services.  Programs include acute inpatient, general and specialty outpatient clinics, community based homeless/justice services, substance abuse treatment and residential services.

    The St. Louis VAMC is a full-service health care facility providing inpatient and ambulatory care in medicine, surgery, psychiatry, neurology, and rehabilitation, as well as over 65 subspecialty areas. It is a two-division facility that serves veterans and their families in east central Missouri and southwestern Illinois.

    The John Cochran Division, named after the late Missouri congressman, is located in midtown St. Louis in close proximity to its affiliated medical schools - St. Louis University and Washington University. It has all of the medical center's operative surgical capabilities, the ambulatory care unit, and a six-story Clinical Addition that includes surgical facilities, intensive care units, outpatient psychiatry clinics, and expanded laboratory.

    The Jefferson Barracks Division is a multi-building complex overlooking the Mississippi River in south St. Louis County. It provides psychiatric treatment, regional spinal cord injury treatment, a nursing home care unit, geriatric health care, rehabilitation services, and a rehabilitation domiciliary program for homeless veterans.

    The St. Louis VA Medical Center is associated with Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) in Belleville, IL; O'Fallon, MO (St. Charles County); and St. Louis, MO (North St. Louis County); and Washington, MO.

    Responsibilities

    The duty station for this position is the Jefferson Barracks Division. The duty station may be changed to one or multiple associated VAMC locations within the metropolitan St. Louis, MO area based on the needs of the medical center. This position is in the bargaining unit.

    NOTE: Applicant's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and step of the applicant selected.

    DUTIES:

    Plans, directs, coordinates, and evaluates nursing and related medical center activities on the evening, night, weekend and holiday tours of duty. Utilizes data base resources to assure safe, effective patient care within organizational guidelines. Leads others to identify performance improvement goals, benchmarks, or outcomes that assist in improvement in the quality of care. Nursing services are provided to the Spinal Cord Injury Service units, Extended Care and Rehabilitation Service units, Mental Health  units, and Primary Care Services at Jefferson Barracks. Provides and promotes learning experiences for nursing staff. Coordinates patient admissions to the appropriate level of care. Provides administrative support to other services on the off tours. Assist in off tour education and performance improvement efforts.

    This position reports to the Associate Chief Nurse, Mental Health.
