    VA TEXAS VALLEY COASTAL BEND HEALTH CARE SYSTEM
    The VATVCBHCS is comprised of the Corpus Christi Outpatient Clinic (CCOPC), Corpus Christi Specialty Clinic (CCSC), Harlingen Outpatient Clinic (HOPC), Health Care Center at Harlingen (HCC), Laredo Outpatient Clinic (LOPC), and McAllen Outpatient Clinic (MCOPC). The VATVCBHCS is an ambulatory health care system providing health care in medicine, surgery, psychiatry, and rehabilitation medicine. The VATVCBHCS also operates a 100-patient Home Based Primary Care program and a 200-patient Care Coordination Home Tele-Health Program. Through the utilization of inpatient/emergency department contracts, approximately 2600 inpatient admission and 5800 ER visits are managed by VATVCBHCS. Affiliated with the University of Texas Regional Academic Health Campus, the system has an active ambulatory care program and serves as a teaching and training site for medical residents. The VATVCBHCS is responsible for an enrollee population of over 30,000 veterans and 350,000 outpatient visits annually.

    Responsibilities

    Peer Specialists function as interdisciplinary team members, assisting physicians and other professional/non-professional personnel in a rehabilitation treatment program.  Performs a variety of therapeutic and supportive tasks that include assisting their peers in articulating their goals for recovery, learning and practicing new skills, helping them monitor their progress, assisting them in their treatment, modeling effective coping techniques and self-help strategies based on the specialist's own recovery experience, and supporting them in advocating for themselves to obtain effective services.  Assists others diagnosed with mental illness or co-occurring disorders to achieve their personal recovery goals by promoting self-determination, personal responsibility, and the empowerment inherent in self-directed recovery.  Under professional supervision, Peer Specialists perform such duties as: 

    ·         interviewing patients to develop information for recovery plans;

    ·         orienting patients to the program;

    ·         observing patients for symptoms, actions, reactions, indications, and contraindications to treatment;

    ·         assisting in individual or group support sessions or in behavioral therapy sessions by providing supportive assistance to Veteran patients;

    ·         leading patient discussion groups;

    ·         providing individual guidance to patients;

    ·         providing liaison with other agencies or facilities concerned with Veteran recovery;

    Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm

    Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met.  Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level."
