    VA Connecticut Healthcare System was officially formed in 1995. We serve veterans in Connecticut and southern New England. The West Haven facility is a tertiary care facility classified as a Clinical Referral Level I Facility. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology and a renowned research program. Comprehensive health care is provided through primary, acute, tertiary and long-term care in areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics and extended care. Newington is an ambulatory care center that provides primary and specialty care. In addition to our main campuses, we operate six community-based primary care centers throughout the state.

    Responsibilities

    This position is located in the Inpatient Pharmacy section of the Pharmacy Service at the West Haven Campus. Pharmacy technicians perform routine pharmacy functions under the supervision of a pharmacist. All pharmacy distributive functions are performed according to VHA, VA Connecticut, and Pharmacy Service policies and procedures to provide comprehensive pharmaceutical services in a timely fashion to meet the needs of our patients and medical center staff. Pharmacy technicians answer the telephones and answer questions from pharmacy and non-pharmacy personnel regarding drug distribution. The following duties include, but are not limited to:

    • Prepares medications by reviewing order, pick lists, restock lists for dispensing in medication carts, automated dispensing cabinets or for delivery. Performs final review of unit dose medications (prepared by another technician) to be dispensed to inpatient areas(unit dose carts).
    • Assists customers at the pharmacy window and answers the telephone. Responds to inquiries to best of technical expertise and refers any complex questions to a pharmacist.
    • Compounds sterile and non-sterile products by interpreting the provider's order; selecting and measuring appropriate ingredients; mixing ingredients in a safe and effective manner; inspecting the final product for accuracy, suitability and elegance; labeling the product; maintaining records of the compounding process; and supplying the product for delivery.
    • Compounds low and medium risk compounded sterile products (CSP), including chemotherapeutic agents, according to current pharmaceutical practice standards (ie. USP Chapter 797) to be delivered in the form of large volume, small volume, infusion syringe, etc.
    • Conducts regularly scheduled inventories per policy and interacts with controlled substance inspection officials.
    • Provides controlled substances training for technicians, pharmacists, inspectors, students, etc.
    • Removes outdated, expired, or excess inventory for return or destruction. Checks all items for hazardous waste and disposes of them in the appropriate bins.
    • Operates, maintains and cleans complicated pharmacy equipment.
    • Prepares and dispenses all medication orders and requests for controlled substances using VISTA and follows VA policies and DEA rules and regulations.
    • Consistently completes the monthly inspections of external medication storage areas and internal pharmacy areas and records any infractions that need correction in a timely manner.
    • Performs additional duties as assigned.
