    About the Memphis VA Medical Center: The VAMC in Memphis, Tennessee consists of one main campus located at 1030 Jefferson Avenue, which includes a sixty-bed Spinal Cord Injury Unit, and ten community based outpatient clinics (CBOC). It is a tertiary care facility classified as a Clinical Referral Level 1 Facility and one of the most complex medical centers in the VA system. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology, as well as extensive education and research programs. Comprehensive primary, secondary, and tertiary health care is provided in areas of medicine, general cardiovascular and neurological surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, spinal cord injury, neurology, oncology, dentistry, and geriatrics. Specialized outpatient services are provided through general, specialty, and subspecialty outpatient clinics including a women's health center. Services are available to more than 206,000 Veterans living in a fifty-three county tristate area (Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi).

    Major duties of the Physical Therapy Assistant include, but are not limited to:

    • Receives and interprets request or instructions for procedures from the physical therapist;
    • Plans and implements complex treatment programs including applying physical therapy procedures to veterans with simple and complex condition under the general supervision of a physical therapist;
    • Completes a preliminary review/examination of patient data, and develops/presents a patient profile to be used in assessing veteran's status;
    • Assists with or renders a course of treatment based on the assessment needs of the veterans in consultation with a physical therapist;
    • Assists therapist in development of comprehensive complex treatment plans that include long and short-term goals;
    • Persuades and motivates veterans and family members to participate in treatment plans and comply with indicated regimens and post-discharge activities;
    • Assist in the performance of, or independently preforms, complex treatment procedures utilizing the full range of modalities including heat, cold, sound, cold laser, electricity, and massage;
    • Administers complex active and passive therapeutic exercises;
    • Fits, adjusts and instructs patients in the sue of orthoses, prostheses, and mobility appliances;
    • Prepares and maintains appropriate equipment and supplies required for treatments;
    • Varies procedures and positions to adjust for the veteran's response to treatment, and with prior approval of the therapist, adapts technical procedures and approaches involving new and unusual treatment and rehabilitation objectives;
    • Modifies intervention environment, tools, materials, and activities in response to each veteran's response to treatment;
    • Prepares and presents written and oral reports for clinical professionals concerned with the patient's care;
    • Maintains a safe work environment to include non-technical maintenance of equipment, safety checks, clean, stocking, etc.
    • Performs all routine clinical activities under the general supervision of a Physical Therapist within the confines of the state practice act.

    Work Schedule: 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday Through Friday
