VA Connecticut Healthcare System was officially formed in 1995. We serve veterans in Connecticut and southern New England. The West Haven facility is a tertiary care facility classified as a Clinical Referral Level I Facility. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology and a renowned research program. Comprehensive health care is provided through primary, acute, tertiary and long-term care in areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics and extended care. Newington is an ambulatory care center that provides primary and specialty care. In addition to our main campuses, we operate six community-based primary care centers throughout the state.

Full-time Physician Assistant (PA) for the HIV Program at VA Connecticut (West Haven)

Major duties and responsibilities include direct patient care of HIV+ adults, both men and women, maintenance of the HIV case registry of VACT, and serving as the lead clinician for the HIV program at VACT.  The vast majority of these assigned duties will take place in Buildings 2 and 8 of VACT during normal, weekday business hours.  This is not a supervisory position.  The PA serves as the HIV Clinic Coordinator and functions in an invaluable role, assisting the chief of the ID service.  It is the responsibility of the PA to ensure the smooth daily operation of the ID clinic by providing care for the multiple needs of our HIV-infected veteran population.  Currently, VACT provides comprehensive primary care and HIV specialty care to nearly 300 HIV infected veteran.

Full-time Physician Assistant (PA) will serve as the lead clinician for the HIV program at VACT and will maintain the HIV case registry.  It is the responsibility of the PA to ensure the smooth daily operation of the ID clinic by providing care for the multiple needs of our HIV-infected veteran population.  Currently, VACT provides comprehensive primary care and HIV specialty care to nearly 300 HIV infected veterans.

*Vital member of multi-disciplinary team

*Provides care to 25-30 HIV infected patients during weekly clinics

*Provides urgent care and consultation during non-clinic hours

*Provides telephonic patient consults throughout the week

*Corresponds with numerous agencies per patients' requests

*Provides appropriate follow-up for lab test results and immunizations for all clinic patients

*Writes prescription narcotic orders for all clinic patients

*Reports positive HIV test results to providers, including advice to non-ID physicians regarding patient HIV counseling and testing

*Coordinates all HIV testing as well as establishes the process to coordinate lab testing and result reporting, in conjunction with the Virology lab

*Reviews patient charts for HIV primary care providers

*Performs Quality Assurance reporting activities

*Provides positive HIV, PPD, TB and STD test results to CT State and Local Health Depts. and other authorities.

*Maintains and reviews patient records for all weekly clinic patients

*Ensures compliance with all medical center policies, JCAHO, State, Federal, HIPAA, and local mandates

*Ensures timely reporting of positive HIV results using correct format/consent forms

*Provides patient and staff education regarding the medical, social, and institutional implications of HIV seropositivity and disease

*Interacts with patients, family members, other medical center staff

*Provides comprehensive patient care under the direction and supervision of the Chief of ID, who is a physician

*Assists in evaluating HIV positive patients admitted to VACT

*Reviews discharge summaries for medication accuracy with regards to antiretroviral therapy, if applicable, and contacts all HIV patients post discharge

*Reviews laboratory results faxed into ID office from VACT ID patients who are receiving care at home or other facilities

*Assists with physician and other ancillary staff education regarding the latest developments in HIV care and treatment

*Participates in educational Pre-Clinic weekly HIV conference

*Provides HIV/AIDS education the VA West Haven on an as needed basis

*Opportunity exists for involvement in HIV-related research both at Yale School of Medicine as well as at VACT

*Opportunity also exists for involvement in education of PA students

Work Schedule: Monday- Friday 8am- 4:30pm
