The Overton Brooks VA Medical Center (OBVAMC) consists of one VHA tertiary care facility and three (3) community based outpatient clinics serving Veterans in twelve (12) Louisiana parishes, eleven (11) counties in Southern Arkansas and nine (9) counties in East Texas. The medical center is classified as a Clinical Referral Level 1C Facility which accepts referrals from the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Healthcare System located in New Orleans, LA and the Alexandria VA Health Care System located in Pineville, LA. OBVAMC is a teaching hospital providing a complete range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology, as well as education and research. Comprehensive health care is provided through primary and specialty care in the areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, and geriatrics. This is a Physician Assistant position located in Mental Health Service at Overton Brooks VAMC.  The incumbent will be responsible for, but not limited to the following duties:

- Records data from clinic visit, including chief complaints, active problems, medications, physical findings and results of diagnostic tests.

- Formulates assessment and plan according to accepted protocols, treatment plans or attending physician's treatment protocols, treatment plans or recommendations.

- Prescribes medications according to outpatient formulary.

- Orders lab and non-invasive diagnostic and preventative screening tests as indicated.

- Works collaboratively with Acute Care psychiatrist and other physicians to evaluate, treat, or arrange disposition for veterans with Mental Health issues identified in Acute Care and Primary Care settings.

- Refers patients to other services of subspecialty clinics as indicated, including nutritional counseling.

- Authorizes special transportation as needed for patients' follow-up appointments as indicated.

- Performs and records history and physical examinations.

- Provides direct, sort-term, crisis intervention, grief work and brief psychotherapy.

- Answers Mental Health inpatient consult requests.

- Counsels patients on smoking cessation.

- Administers or orders appropriate immunizations.

- Provides patient education of medical conditions, preventive measures and prescribed treatments.

- Performs lab review, identifying abnormalities according to established guidelines.

- Approves or disapproves clinic appointment requests according to policies.

- Educates NU or CNS students.

- Participates in clinical research.

- Performs BLS.

- Calls codes when indicated and manages CPR efforts until code team arrives

Work Schedule:  Monday - Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm
