    Responsibilities

    If you are a Nurse Practitioner, please apply on Job Announcement: STL-17-T38-2006208

    Function as a Neurosurgery Physician Assistant.  This position will function independently as a clinical provider within the Neurosurgery department working closely with nursing, physicians, as well as trainee's.  The position will ensure that patients receive prompt, continues care.  Plan and coordinate to flow of patients and information through the clinic, including, reviewing new consults, assigning physician providers and redistributing patient load following staff changes.  Provider care coordination support to the department, including established procedures to ensure that laboratory tests that have been ordered are complete and available, follow up care is timely, ensuring supportive ancillary support is coordinated and provided to the patient.  Provide outpatient transfusions and hydration by the attending physician and recognize and report all adverse effects of chemotherapy to the physician.  Duties to include, but not limited to;

    • Evaluate patients and write assessments and plans in the patient's chart. Write orders for patient care, evaluation and treatment plans in accordance with the individuals Scope of Practice and under the authority of the Chief of Neurosurgery or their designee.
    Perform office procedures to include minor surgical procedures (suture removal, I&D, removal of foreign bodies etc.) Apply and remove splints, dressings, braces and various other devices used in the treatment of Neurosurgical patients.Perform general patient counseling, education and pre- and post-operative patient planning. Write and dictate pre- and post-operative History and Physical exams, admission notes, discharge summaries and operative ports as directed. Assist with surgical procedures in the operating room under the supervision of the Neurosurgical staff.Order and interpret medical tests and x-rays to include specialty procedures (MRI's, CAT, Myelograms, Nuclear Medicine studies etc.) Assist with clinical studies assigned to byChief of Neurosurgery. Attend Committee meetings, Process improvement teams, etc. to represent the Neurosurgical service as directed bythe Chief of Neurosurgery or Chief of Surgical Service. Functions to coordinate processes for the Neurosurgical outpatient clinic and support the general overall function ofthis clinic. Coordinate referrals, scheduling and evaluations of patients at the St. Louis VAMC as well as those referrals from outside VA Healthcare System that are sent to the Neurosurgical Service. Facilitate response/action to patient inquiries to care and treatment by the Neurosurgical staff for the Chief of Neurosurgery. Assist the Neurosurgical Service in requesting and obtaining equipment, supplies, etc., needed for the out-patient clinic as well as the operating room through the administrator of the Surgical Service at the direction of the Chief of Neurosurgery. Functions as the liaison between other subspecialties with-in the St. Louis VA Medical Center as it relates to care and treatment of Neurosurgical patients.

    Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm
