The Augusta Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center is a two-division Medical Center that provides tertiary care in medicine, surgery, neurology, psychiatry, rehabilitation medicine, and spinal cord injury. The Medical Center is affiliated with the Georgia Regents University, Augusta, GA and as such integrates teaching, research, and advanced patient care, making it an attractive academic medical center.         Applicant's education and experience will be reviewed by the Physician Assistant Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected.  The recommended salary may be at any point in the range listed for this vacancy.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., however, subject to change based on the needs of the service and the Medical Center. The individual may work weekends and holidays as required.

Location of position: Downtown Division, Spinal Cord Injury


    This position is located in the Spinal Cord Injury Service Line at Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center, Augusta, GA.  The Physician Assistant :
                          • Performs initial and interim histories and physical examinations on inpatients and outpatients assigned to our service.
                          • Screens patients to determine the need for hospital admission.
                          • Orders routine laboratory, radiology and diagnostic tests on patients assigned to our service.
                          • Initiates and/or expedites requests for consultations, special tests, or studies on assigned patients, and will keep the supervising physician apprised of results and progress.
                          • Makes rounds on assigned inpatients and write/dictate progress notes and may dictate the discharge summary (which must be countersigned).
                          • Provides necessary patient education, and applies currently accepted preventive health care measures to patients and/or their families.
                          • Starts intravenous (IV) solutions and administer IV medications after conferring with the supervising physician.
                          • Orders and/or catheterizes the bladder, including indwelling Foley catheters. May order and change gastrostomy tubes. Refills, programs and manages Baclofen pumps.
                          • May initiate Advanced Cardiac Life Support in accordance with current ACLS protocols to include defibrillation/cardioversion if certified; and treatment of life threatening traumatic injuries.
                          • Duties may include quality improvement, peer review, serving on various committees, as may be directed by the Service Line Executive or Medical Director or administration; and other non-clinical tasks as deemed necessary. Also, duties may include a variety of settings such as inpatient, outpatient clinic, and Homecare.
