                                 VA TEXAS VALLEY COASTAL BEND HEALTH CARE SYSTEM
    The VATVCBHCS is comprised of the Corpus Christi Outpatient Clinic (CCOPC), Corpus Christi Specialty Clinic (CCSC), Harlingen Outpatient Clinic (HOPC), Health Care Center at Harlingen (HCC), Laredo Outpatient Clinic (LOPC), and McAllen Outpatient Clinic (MCOPC).  The VATVCBHCS is a virtual health care system providing secondary and tertiary health care in medicine, surgery, psychiatry, and rehabilitation medicine.  The VATVCBHCS also operates a 100-patient Home Based Primary Care program and a 200-patient Care Coordination Home Tele-Health Program.  Through the utilization of 2 complex inpatient/emergency department contracts, approximately 1600 inpatient admission and 1200 ER visits are managed by VATVCBHCS.  Affiliated with the University of Texas Regional Academic Health Campus, the system has an active ambulatory care program and serves as a teaching and training site for medical residents.  The VATVCBHCS is responsible for an enrollee population of over 30,000 veterans and 25,000 outpatient visits annually.

    Responsibilities

    As a Cardiologist for the VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend, you will be working in a state of the art Ambulatory Surgery Center providing care in our Cardiology Clinic. Generalized duties of the general staff Cardiologist involve a focus on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of many different cardiovascular conditions, including but not limited to coronary artery disease, cardiac arrhythmia, hypertension, peripheral arterial disease and heart failure. 

    Duties indicated below are not all inclusive of assigned duties and/or responsibilities, but provides a general overview of general performance expectations and responsibilities.


    1. Application of accepted protocols for assessment of the individual presenting with altered cardiology status.  Assessment may include gathering verbal and documented history, physical status examination and medical and laboratory evaluation.

    2. Diagnostic description or formulation to guide appropriate acute and secondary treatment interventions.

    3. Provision of cardiac care according to his/her privileges.

    4. Staff Cardiologists are ultimately responsible for all aspects of Cardiology care.

    5. Staff cardiologists provide or assist residents and/or the nurse practitioner in the process of evaluation and treatment of the cardiology patients.

    6. Staff cardiologists evaluate the patient to assess changes in the physical and mental status.  A progress note is written in the patient's chart.  Notes also include the concurrence with notes written by the resident, and attending notes as appropriate.

    7. Staff cardiologists perform inpatient cardiology consultation reviews, and outpatient cardiology evaluations and treatment.

    8. Staff cardiologists are appropriately credentialed and privileged.  They participate in various hospital committees, departmental and hospital in-service programs, and education programs of the department and the hospital.  They are also involved in continuous quality improvement through peer review process.

    9. Staff cardiologists shall be responsible for outpatient care, and graduate and undergraduate medical education, and scientific research as appropriate. 

    10.  The General Cardiologist is directly responsible to the Chief of Cardiology and to the Chief of Medicine for all clinical and administrative duties. 

    11.  Screens all consults to ensure they are in compliance with the Clinical Practice guidelines and are timely and accurately placed with the appropriate providers. 

    12.  Maintains a thorough working knowledge of the performance improvement process outlined by the Joint Commission and stays current with their guidelines. 

    13.  Maintains certification and license as a General Cardiologist.

    Salary: The applicant's education and experiences will be reviewed by a Compensation Panel in determining the salary of the applicant selected. The recommended salary may be at any point in the range listed for this vacancy.

    Work Schedule: 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.; Alternate schedules may be necessary to meet the needs of the organization.  Covering on-call Cardiology on nights and weekends required.
