Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center, Richmond, Virginia, is actively seeking a full-time board eligible/board certified physician for the position of Chief Health Informatics Officer.  The medical center is a 427-bed tertiary care, teaching facility closely affiliated with the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine.  We are a teaching hospital, with modern technology that supports our education and research mission.

The Chief, Health Informatics for the Clinical Informatics Section is aligned under the Deputy Chief of Staff's office at the McGuire VA Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia.  The Chief, Health Informatics is responsible for the management and operation of all clinical programs and services as directed by the Deputy Chief of Staff.  The incumbent ensures that knowledge of informatics is infused throughout the facility, and that clinical information issues affecting the delivery of care are clearly articulated and raised appropriately for action by the various managers and committees.  The incumbent must possess both the requisite information technology (IT) expertise and the clinical perspective.

The Chief, Health Informatics has primary responsibility for developing staff acceptance of the Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) and other clinical applications that support health care delivery for patients and care givers.  A core competency of IT/Informatics consultancy at the point of care delivery will maintain and optimize the Veterans Health Administration's (VHA) ability to deliver superb health care.

The incumbent acts as the key communicator of clinical informatics and will champion adoption of technology, such as computerized physician order entry (CPOE), clinical documentation, medication management, and ambulatory electronic medical records; will monitor compliance, recommend solutions to problems and processes, and will facilitate workflow redesign in support of best practices. 

The McGuire VA Medical Center offers many clinical services which includes a very active transplant program (heart, liver); the largest acute spinal cord injury center in the VA system; a poly-trauma unit (traumatic brain injury center); Parkinson's Disease Research, Education, and Clinic Center (PADRECC); a Geriatrics & Extended Care Unit (Center of Excellence); a research program (focusing on clinical trials); strong residency training program (primary affiliate Virginia Commonwealth University); and Hospice Unit. The Richmond VAMC is a leader in performance improvement and patient safety.

Comprehensive health care is provided through primary care, tertiary care, and long-term care. Expertise is available in medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, hematology/oncology, radiation oncology, radiology including PET scanner, dialysis, cardiology, endocrinology (Diabetes Center of Excellence), dentistry, spinal cord injury, and hospice. We have 3 community based outpatient clinics in Fredericksburg, Charlottesville and Emporia, Virginia. 

The applicant should be eligible for academic appointment at the associate or full professor level, and is expected to practice medicine at the Richmond VAMC in his or her field.
