    Summary

    The VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System (VAEKHCS), is a 1c complexity level Joint Commission accredited health care system consisting of 2 Medical Centers (Colmery-O'Neil VA Medical Center in Topeka and Dwight D. Eisenhower VA Medical Center in Leavenworth). There are a total of 557 operating beds which includes a 138 bed long-term care facility, a 202 bed domiciliary and 9 outpatient clinics serving Eastern Kansas and Western Missouri. As a key component of the VA Heartland Network, Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) 15, VAEKHCS treats 36,000 Veterans and has an annual operating budget of $300 million. VAEKHCS offers significant inpatient and outpatient services with a focus on primary care, psychiatric treatment, and extended care supported by nursing home care units and a domiciliary. The health care system provides primary through secondary treatment in general medicine and surgery, and primary through tertiary levels of care in psychiatry, substance abuse, and post traumatic stress disorder treatment. Patient services are offered in primary care, internal medicine, cardiology, pulmonology, infectious disease, gastroenterology, dermatology, rheumatology, geriatric medicine, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, general surgery, thoracic surgery, vascular surgery, orthopedic surgery, podiatry, urology, ophthalmology, and optometry. In medicine and surgery, the scope of services ranges from intensive care to intermediate and nursing home care. Acute and long-term psychiatric care, substance abuse treatment, domiciliary care, and vocational Rehabilitation services are offered.

    Responsibilities

    This is an open continuous announcement and will be closed once the position is filled. The first cutoff date is Tuesday, 9/19/2017. After that date, applications will be reviewed every two weeks and forwarded to management for consideration.

    This position is for one (1) position with a duty station located at either Topeka, KS or Leavenworth, KS. Duty station will be determined upon selection.

    The Chief of Staff serves a member of the Executive Leadership Team of VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System and promotes an environment of interdisciplinary patient-centered medical excellence.  Major duties include, but are not limited to:

    Monitors and ensures medical staff compliance with agency regulations, medical staff bylaws, rules, regulations, VA facility policies, Joint Commission standards and other appropriate regulations and creates an environment of system oriented continuous quality improvement, within which programs and quality of care effectiveness are evaluated. Monitor resource utilization and allocation and make recommendations for improvement in efficiency and service delivery. Promotes the development of health care professionals through counseling, mentoring, teaching and encouraging self-assessment. Monitors and promotes ethical conduct, quality of care and customer service practices. Works to enhance and expand facility programs that reflect the mission and priorities of the VA and patient care needs.  Recruits and retains certified licensed professional staff, who are graduates of approved medical schools and ensures that appropriate staff practitioners are credentialed and privileged in accordance with VA and Joint Commission requirements. Maintains and enhances relationships with academic affiliates including the University of Kansas Medical Center, University of Missouri-Kansas City, the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences, and associated health academic affiliates. Serves as a professional liaison to other VA, federal, community, affiliate, media, congressional, and constituent organizations. 

    Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm.  Subject to call 24 hours per day/7 days per week.

    Travel Required

    50% or less - Routine travel between the Topeka, KS and Leavenworth, KS facilities is required.
